Book five in the six-book Land of Stories series of kids' novels. In this one, our young protagonists, Alex and Connor, must save the land of fairy tales from devastation at the hands of villains from other classic stories. So they use their power to enter fictional worlds to recruit allies from short stories that Connor himself has written. Which include characters based on people they know in the fairy tale kingdoms, so there's something entertainingly complicated and meta about the whole thing. Like the other books in this series, it's a lot of fun and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny. And I'm actually kind of impressed with how much Connor's stories actually feel like things that might have been written by a talented teenage boy, with just the right mix of imagination and silliness. I really wasn't sure how Colfer could keep this series going and still be interesting when then intention was a trilogy. I no longer have those concerns. This story was smart and funny and scary all at the same time. I am most impressed with how Conner grows as a person. If you like fairy tales and fun, easy writing, give this series a try. (
