Never judge a book by its cover ... Due to her involvement in an unfortunate set of mishaps between the dragons and the Fae, Librarian spy Irene is stuck on probation, doing what should be simple fetch-and-retrieve projects for the mysterious Library. But trouble has a tendency to find both Irene and her apprentice, Kai a dragon prince and, before they know it, they are entangled in more danger than they can handle ... Irene s longtime nemesis, Alberich, has once again been making waves across multiple worlds, and, this time, his goals are much larger than obtaining a single book or wreaking vengeance upon a single Librarian. He aims to destroy the entire Library and make sure Irene goes down with it. With so much at stake, Irene will need every tool at her disposal to stay alive. But even as she draws her allies close around her, the greatest danger might be lurking from somewhere close someone she never expected to betray her ...… (mer)

Obviously not the best place to start reading a series. However, my issues with this book didn't have to do with not being able to follow the plot so much as with the fact that there barely seemed to be one. The characters careered between crises without much rhyme or reason. Waiting until the final chapter to reveal why the villain is stalking Irene in particular is a decision I disagree with.

The prose is exposition-heavy. I realize that with a later book in a series there have to be some call-backs to prior action to explain what's going on, but these felt heavy-handed, and none of the issues that Irene spends most of the book worried about actually amount to anything in the end. The world-building is novel, but I don't think the author took enough advantage of it. ( )

It’s been a month and a half since I finished this book, and while I remember enjoying it for its breeziness and zip and wild adventures, the fact that I’m having to actively remember what this book was about says something. That said, this is 100% a series I pick up when I want entertainment and moderate predictability and light metafiction, and that, Cogman still delivers.

I liked the ways in which the world of the series was fleshed out here. We see more of the workings of the Library, and more variant worlds, and get more nuance when it comes to the fae and the dragons. I also liked the little details and doubts Cogman sows when it comes to the Library, and her general inventiveness. Also, she’s clearly building to something, so I’ll have to keep reading to find out what.

The characters? A lot of them are pretty archetypal, but that goes without saying for the world she’s built up, and they’re no less fun for all that. There’s something to be said for knowing the fop will be a fop, the rule-follower a rule-follower, that some people just will betray others, and the anticipation of things going pear-shaped. The characters who don’t fit a mold so much are a bit more interesting, true, and they by and large keep the story moving forward, but in some ways they’re as bound to their ways of thinking as the archetypes. Which is maybe the point. Here be themes and character development.

(I’ve seen people complaining about the will-they-won’t-they of Kai and Irene and I’ll confess, that was one of my least favourite parts of reading this.)

But! Like I said, I wanted fun and parallel worlds and books and daring-do, and there’s still quite a lot of all those things in this installment. I’m hoping some of the supporting characters come back. I’m definitely hoping the dangled plot threads see fruition. Do I rec it? Sure, if you’re looking for the same things I was. Am I going to pick up the next book anytime soon? Honestly, probably not.

6.5/10

There are a number of series I turn to when I'm looking for a quick, entertaining diversion full of hijinks: the Invisible Library is firmly one of those, and The Burning Page is a decent instalment. Irene is back in the field, still trying to work off her demerits for abandoning her post to rescue Kai, which means we get the fun of visiting multiple worlds as she tries to retrieve volumes for the Library.

However, the series meta-plot is ratcheting up: doorways between worlds are exploding, Librarians are disappearing, a Fae enemy wants Irene dead and Kai's relatives are much too keen to get involved ('for your safety', HA). To top it off, arch-nemesis Alberich is back with a moustache-twirling plan.

Expect over the top set pieces and a great deal of Irene being fabulously competent (I love how her confidence has grown).

Solid, high-octane fun.

Alberich is back, and this time has made his move on the Library. He's doing this by destabilising the links between worlds that the Library has created, and is killing Librarians as well. Aided by Kai, and reluctantly by Zaytanna, it falls to Irene to discover Alberich's lair and stop him. In the course of this, many unique stories are destroyed when Irene sets fire to the lair. Zaytanna dies in the course of this; it seems she had been suborned by Alberich and her loyalty ensured by a metaphysical choke-chain.
