In this powerful novel, William W. Johnstone tells the story of a young Missourian forced by fate and violence into lawlessness-where he sees a chance to right the wrong that shattered his family and his soul . . . Smoke Jensen is a young man raised on loss and bitterness, nurtured by a mountain man named Preacher. Now, Smoke Jensen, with a new black horse and an old grudge, slips over the unmarked border into the turbulent Idaho Territory. Ahead is a town called Bury, built on stolen gold, and run by a band of ruthless men who had a hand in the murder of Smoke's brother in the Civil War. Smoke's father died in pursuit of those killers, but urged his son not to waste his life on vengeance . . . Swift, powerful, and poetic, Return of the Mountain Man is an action-packed tale by William W. Johnstone, an American master-and a great chronicler of our harsh and often unforgiving last frontier. Kirby “Smoke” Jensen is back, and he is out to get those responsible for the death of his father, brother, wife, and baby son. However, he cannot go into any town with guns blazing because there is a wanted poster out for his arrest. So, he assumes a different name, Buck West. Slowly he makes his way to a town called Bury to find the men who hired the killers to come after him and call them out. Right now, the three men hide under a façade of respectable townsfolk, prosperous ranch owners and one with a longing for political fame. As he travels the vast land, he can sense someone is on his trail but who it is remains a mystery.
In the town of Bury, he successfully ingratiates himself into a group of men to get closer to his prey. At the same time, Buck begins to develop deep feelings for the schoolteacher. But can Ms. Sally Reynolds be trusted with his secret identity, current plans and past?
Audiences will once again enjoy the exiting adventure and danger that Smoke faces. It is a tale of a hero who brings justice to those who do wrong and relies not on the speed of his draw but what Preacher has taught him over so many years. The romance blooming with Smoke and Sally is what will lead fans to want more of these two stalwart characters.
