Even though Baylor's twin sister, Kristina died before they were born, she now stays by his side as a ghost and helps him communicate with the dead. This isn't always convenient because the dead often want him to deliver messages to family members who are still alive. Baylor understands that this is the purpose of his gift, but it becomes cumbersome at times when so many want messages delivered all at once. It becomes even more of a problem when he is suddenly visited by a red-eyed, sheet-covered ghost who won't communicate with Baylor.

Baylor's Guide to the Other Side is a delightful story about a very unique family. The main characters are well-developed in this story, so we understand their points of view, especially Baylor and Kristina. The book is filled with funny as well as poignant moments. While Baylor's gift is seemingly unbelievable, his family still supports him and tries to figure out ways to help him. The messages he delivers to people seem like the kind of things people would want to know from loved ones who have passed on, making this a more believable story. Overall, Baylor's Guide to the Other Side is an insightful story filled with emotions and humor. 4 1/2 stars. ( )

Imfeld has a good premise here, Baylor Boscoe is a medium and with the help of his twin sister Kristina can communicate with the dead and provide closure for spirits and their loved ones. When your thirteen that's a big responsibility. He spends a lot of time lighting candles and gathering positive energy so he has the stomach to Teresa Caputo the hell out of people he runs into who have needy dead relatives clinging to them.

It gets stranger when you find out that Kristina is a ghost, having died in the womb. Middle grade readers may not get the political creeps when finding out this fact, but for me the implications were uncomfortable. Not that a children's novel about death should be comfortable, but the constant efforts to inject humor into the story: the pushy ghosts, the whining about boring ol' Keene, NH, and Kristina's close personal friendship with notable dead from the other side, make me think this story was supposed to be comfortable.

The pace was also fairly slow, the scary ghost haunting him takes forever to make a move, and does so with seriously unhelpful hints as to why he's haunting, which isn't good for this kind of supernatural kid's novel, but the target audience probably won't mind as long as the jokes keep coming. ( )
