Audrey Rose is determined to solve the mystery of Jack the Ripper. But as her investigation progresses, she starts to be concerned that perhaps Jack the Ripper is closer to her than she initially thought. This had the potential to be really interesting but it didn’t quite get there, and as for the ending… yikes! ( )

I really did enjoy this. This book was the authors first which made me a bit nervous because an authors first book is usually not their best but this was quite good. At the risk of sounding gruesome, Jack the Ripper has always intrigued me. I have watched and read many stories about him. This book was very well done. Yes quite a bit was changed to make the fictional world work but I thought it all worked really well. I liked the main characters of Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell. I thought the romance and mystery were done well and ended nicely together to create a very interesting story. A lot of this book discusses female empowerment, as the main character is an atheist woman who wants to be a forensic scientist in Victorian times. I thought those parts of the book were done well and were not heavy handed but I am a woman. I was satisfied with the way the mystery wrapped up and with the way the book ended. This was a very good read for me and I would definitely read a sequel and I would recommend this book. ( )

(Read my short review on the whole series here)

Trigger warnings: death of loved ones, cadavers, displaced visceral, gore (Not too much on the details but there surely were some details)

This book is the first proper mystery I’ve read. Typically I avoid reading books with murders and gore, so imagine my surprise when I not just like it, but love it. (Just for reference, I mostly read YA fantasy)

Stalking Jack the Ripper is a brilliant historical fiction addressing the relationship between science and humanity. The journey began with Audrey Rose, a Lord’s daughter who decided to follow her dream— to study forensic medicine, — regardless of social values, that girls were not proper to do such things. The pacing was a bit slow at first, yet as the evidence unfolded and suspense built up, I found myself turning back again and again to this mystery.

The first chapter, Preliminary Incision, grabbed my attention immediately. As someone who had just finished anatomy courses in college, I couldn’t have felt more familiar with the work Audrey Rose was doing. Imagine my delight to read similar experiences in a YA novel! I relished every class she took and every deduction she made. I know this would not be the case for most readers out there, but if you’re interested in science in general, or if you crave adventures and suspense, you’ll devour and love this book.

While I enjoyed the plot and all the anatomical references immensely, I’m not emotionally invested with the characters, as I usually did with other books. While I’ve heard so many good things about the famous Mr. Thomas Cresswell, I couldn’t find the appeal. The only thing I felt about him was that he was an unnaturally good observer, and a bit too annoying to ignore. As for Audrey Rose, apart from our similar learning experience, I was having a hard time figuring out her personality and that was a bit disappointed. She was definitely a smart and independent character, and I respect for her it, yet… hopefully I’ll get to know her more in the next book.

That being said… I love the ending so, so much. I didn’t see it coming and I was blown away with so many complicated emotions and thoughts. It really made me think about the meaning of life and the meaning of love, and all those important qualities that make us human. It was the most powerful ending, albeit a tragic one, and I know these sentiments are something I will keep in my heart for a very long time. The motive of Jack the Ripper was a clear message that sometimes the border between right and wrong isn’t as simple as it seems. And that, in my opinion, is what truly makes this book remarkable.

Overall, Stalking Jack the Ripper is an exciting mystery that readers new to the genre will have no problems following and enjoying (like myself!). Reading outside my normal genres is refreshing and I’m so glad I pick up this book. While it has some flaws, and certainly not for everyone, I would urge you to give it a try. You might be surprised at how much you love it. ( )

It was a really interesting concept but there were parts where I was banging my head against the wall. Audrey Rose likes to pick a suspect and not acknowledge facts pointing elsewhere until 100% proven wrong with her suspicions. Since she’s the POV, you’re left with her confirmation biases and can’t really solve the case yourself (getting the facts and coming to my own conclusions is generally why I enjoy mysteries).

I did love the historical setting and the author’s attempt to make it as accurate as possible and will definitely be trying out book two to see f there are any improvements in the main character’s deductions (surely she’ll start to learn from her mistakes and make a more compelling character?). ( )

It's been so long that I've read a proper murder mystery or even a historical book that this one came as a breath of fresh air and I think it was exactly what I needed at this time. Jack the Ripper is such a fascinating and popular true crime story and I was really excited to read a fiction based on it. It was dark and thrilling but also so much fun with a cast of very intriguing characters and I can't wait to read the next installment.

Audrey Rose is a wonderful protagonist and someone who I wanted to root for right from the get go. She is intelligent, strong willed, sassy, compassionate and will do whatever it takes to follow the path that she has chosen for herself. She is questioned or looked down upon every step of the way because she would rather spend her time dissecting corpses and investigating crimes than gossipping or organizing tea parties, but she never lets others' opinions change her mind - she just smartly figures out ways to get around all the rules. Her utmost dedication to science and belief in equal opportunities for women are definitely revolutionary for her times and it was heartening to read about a character with such strong convictions. There were times when she judged other girls her age for giving importance only to beauty and scoring husbands and it wasn't cool, but I could understand her because she was also being judged all the time.

Thomas is her Uncle's student from his forensics class and is equally smart and knows it. He is so confident in his abilities and comes across as arrogant, is very good at detaching himself while investigating the murders which makes him seem unemotional or apathetic but he is actually very sweet, charming and swoon worthy. He loves showing off his deduction skills and it gave so much Sherlock vibes, it was lots of fun to read. He is just as much non conforming to society's expectations as Audrey is, so he is quite supportive of her endeavor to investigate and catch Jack the Ripper. He is also very sarcastic and the flirty banter between them is just too cute. They both may be attracted to the other's looks but their friendship and later romance slowly develops on a foundation of mutual respect for each other's intelligence and personalities, and I loved that especially due to the historical setting.

The writing in the book is excellent for a debut novel and I really didn't want to put it down. The setting of London is eery and creepy and the dull rainy foggy days are described so well, it makes for the perfect atmosphere. The mutilated bodies and the theories of how the murders may have been committed are described in all the gory details; it was really nauseating sometimes and gave me chills. Even the science of performing the autopsies and all the methods of forensic investigations utilized during the 1800s are articulated in detail which shows how diligent the author was in her research. I especially enjoyed the original pictures from the time period and Jack the Ripper's letters because they made the book seem more creepy and real. As I'm not very good at predicting, I really didn't figure out who the killer was until just a few minutes before Audrey did and I did not see that coming. The ending was devastating but with a tad bit of hope and sets up the next book very neatly.

If you read a lot of murder mysteries, this book might seem predictable but for me, it was just the perfect blend of macabre and entertaining. The characters are absolutely delightful and it was so interesting to go on this thrilling journey with them to discover the truth. If you are fascinated by Jack the Ripper or love murder mysteries or if fierce Victorian heroines are your thing, then this book is perfect for you. Give it a chance and you won't regret it 🙂🙂🙂 ( )
