"The brilliant new novel in Robert B. Parker's New York Times-bestselling series featuring police chief Jesse Stone. All is quiet in Paradise, except for a spate of innocuous vandalism. Good thing, too, because Jesse Stone is preoccupied with the women in his life, both past and present. As his ex-wife, Jenn, is about to marry a Dallas real-estate tycoon, Jesse isn't too sure his relationship with former FBI agent Diana Evans is built to last. But those concerns get put on the back burner when a major Boston crime boss is brutally murdered. Despite all evidence to the contrary, Jesse suspects it's the work of Mr. Peepers, a psychotic assassin who has caused trouble for Jesse in the past. Peepers has long promised revenge against the Mob, Jesse, and Suit for their roles in foiling one of his hits--and against Jenn as well. And though Jesse and Jenn have long parted ways, Jesse still feels responsible for her safety. Jesse and Diana head to Dallas for the wedding and, along with the tycoon's security team, try to stop Peepers before the bill comes due. With Peepers toying with the authorities as to when and where he'll strike, Jesse is up against the wall. Still, there's a debt to pay and blood to be spilled to satisfy it. But whose blood, and just how much?"--… (mer)

Review: Absolutely hate it that Diane is killed off. Glad Vinnie get Peepers in the end. ( )

Robert B. Parker's Debt to Pay was a murder mystery book that took place in present day time. A Debt to Pay contains a lot of murder, guns and gore. Unfortunately the story goes on and on then concludes all of a sudden. One asks oneself if the author realized that the story lingered way too long so he needed to end it with an unexplained ending leaving the reader with the question, "what?" Because of the lengthy descriptions, annoying storyline and abrupt ending, this book is awarded only three stars. ( )

What does the murder of a Boston crime boss have to do with Police Chief Jesse Stone in small town Paradise, Massachusetts? Revenge - serious and sadistic revenge by a deadly killer nicknamed Mr. Peepers.

It is a serious cat an mouse game that is being played. Mr. Peepers is out to revenge the interference of the people who foiled one of his hits. Teasing the authorities about who, when and where he will take his revenge, Peepers is playing a deadly mind game.

The action is good and there is tension through the whole book, that keep you reading.

Along with the revenge, Jesse is dealing the his feeling about his ex and the fact she is remarrying. He has also become involved with a woman who seems to be a better match for Jesse emotionally and mentally. The question is 'does he want it to be permanent?' Keeping his head straight and dealing with these three serious items can be pretty tricky. ( )

More pathos for Jessee than usual; murder of "fiance" in last chapter moves him seriously back to alcohol. Hunt for Mr. Peepers, who kills for his own purpose - sometime rudeness, sometimes for revenge and sometimes for no apparent reason. ( )
