"Natasha: I'm a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I'm definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won't be my story. Daniel: I've always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents' high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store--for both of us. The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?"--… (mer)

In the book, "The Sun is Also a Star," a girl named Natasha finds out her family is getting deported and then meets Daniel who is trying to get into Yale. They both help each other work through their issues. Natasha is doing everything she can to stop her family from being deported and Daniel fights against his parents wishes for him to become a doctor because he want to become a poet. I loved reading this book because it was insightful and very entertaining. I am not a big reader, but I could not put this book down after reading the first few chapters. I would definitely recommend this book. ( )

Natasha's family is being deported-tonight. she is on a mission to get the decision over turned so they can stay. She doesn't have time for boys who are poets, talk about love, and complicate her life.

Daniel has an interview with a college alumni, for possible early acceptance to Yale. He doesn't have time for a girl who only believes in science. But he’ll make time to scientifically prove they could fall in love in one day. Because he wants something different than what his parents want for him—passion in his work and life.

One day makes up the bulk of this novel with alternating points of view between Natasha and Daniel with various side characters interspersed in between. I loved it. I’d read Everything Everything last year and this is so much better. It’s wonderful to experience and author’s growth as a writer and storyteller. I read this in one day, I was so taken in by it. ( )

YA is such a great genre with talented writers like Yoon. Here she recounts the teen romance of a lifetime, orchestrated by fate and foiled by time. Natasha and Daniel are both missing school to confront their futures in NYC - Natasha to see if she can fend off her family's deportation back to Jamaica that evening and Daniel to interview with a Yale alum for his own college admission. They meet by chance - and Daniel is instantly smitten. Natasha has her guard up - because she is a girl in the city, but also because she knows of her family's likely imminent departure. Why complicate it? However, through some other twists and turns of fate, they spend the day together, falling in love in the same passionate instant way of Romeo and Juliet, with their own constraints. Natasha is level-headed, scientific and cautious. She is a victim of her father's selfishness and bad choices (DUI) which is the reason for their deportment. She fears her future is in jeopardy Daniel is romantic, impulsive and poetic. He Korean parents want him to be a doctor, but he wants to write. They both rub off on each other a bit over the course of the day, and even end up meeting each other's families. Daniel observes: "Maybe part of falling in love with someone else is also falling in love with yourself. I like who I am with her" (150). Their attraction is intense and physical and spiritual. Daniel tells her: "You know the way we feel right now? This connection between us that we don't understand and we don't want to let go of? That's God....God is the connection of the very best parts of us." (272) They share their hopes, dreams, disappointments in people they counted on (Natasha's father, Daniel's brother) and ultimately try to fight the ticking clock with some hope and last chances. But the author doesn't pander. However, there is a nice epilogue that brings things full circle in a satisfying way. One other unique feature of the book that sets it apart and makes it more than just a teen romance is little snippets of other characters' viewpoints and stories. It reminds us that everyone has something no one else sees and that affects the way we move in the world. Also, like the movie Crash, so many things in life are chance timing that open a whole possibility for different interactions and outcomes. A fun Valentine's Day read. ( )

So, there may have been a few moments that were just a little too sappy for me, but overall I loved this book. It's not an uncomplicated romance, but I loved that the complications were mostly exterior. The feelings of the two participants were really never in doubt. I also loved the structure of this book and the way in which we see briefly from many points of view, before returning to our main couple. ( )

“Stars are important," I say, laughing.

"Sure, but why not more poems about the sun? The sun is also a star, and it's our most important one. That alone should be worth a poem or two.”

BUDDY READ WITH THE VERY AWESOME CHLOE!!!

There are so many things I loved about this book. I kid you not. I was about 75% into this book and I already shelved this as my favorites.

I loved everything about it!! From the characters to the uniqueness of the plot to the originality, creativity and style of writing. This is truly one of Nicola Yoon's greatest creations. I was crying by the end of the book that it took me a good 15 minutes to process everything and continue reading on.

I learned so many things about the Jamaican and Korean culture here so that was a very much appreciated part of the book since I enjoy learning more about different cultures, especially when they are incorporated into stories that I have fallen in love with.

Though, this book is a type of Insta-love it isn't the usual kind if you know what I mean. The plot ended up how I thought it would but the best thing about this book is the little details about it.

THE CHARACTERS ! I so very much appreciate it when authors put some kind of focus on minor characters and how Nicola Yoon wrote it was just amazing and creative. Every little detail was thought out and not just put out there. I really loved it.

And of course, how can we not talk about Daniel and Natasha. These two. Are. Babies. I can fall in love with them all over again they are just the definition of all things romantic. You cannot fight me on this. I have already decided I love them. I enjoyed their story and there really isn't anything much more to say to that. It just really is a good love story, good contemporary and I like books that tackle more than just the love story.

Go ahead and pick up this book readers of YA Contemporary because you will not be disappointed.
