Evaluation of Quality: The illustrations are vibrant and interact with the text in interesting ways.
Assessment of potential use:This book would be great for an early Spanish course or for ESOL students. It contains much Spanish and English vocabulary
Assessment of appeal to children: Children who have Latinx heritage or are from South America will recognize aspects of Juana's life but all children can empathize Juana's difficulty to learn a new language

Juana and Lucas is great story about a girl who loves to share bits of her life in Bogota Colombia, her childhood, and things she loves and things she isn't so fond of. This is a great book for kids 8 to 10 3rd thru 5th grade. Its very detailed description and explanatory tone make this a great book to discuss after reading. The illustrations are very delightful and absorbing. I think this is an amazing way to explore other countries. This book is a great idea. ( )

This book is about a girl from Colombia named Juana. Throughout the book we learn about things she loves such as, her dog, Brussels sprouts, and school, and the thing she does not like, learning English. This book is bilingual and has thing written in Spanish and things written in English, which I think is very important for younger kids to learn because it is an important aspect in life. The illustrations and the way the book is written is very engaging. I enjoyed reading this short chapter book and I beleive young students would enjoy reading it as well. ( )

Juana is a little girl from Columbia. Juana is full of life and it shows throughout the book. She points out the different things she LOVES. As she describes the things she loves, she points out the one thing she hates, learning English. Juana’s Abuelo informed her of the benefits he gained learning English and convinced her to learn by offering a trip to Spaceland. This was a cute book. I like how words she felt strongly about were in a larger font. There were certain words throughout the book that was in Spanish and although I didn’t know what the word meant I was able to use context clues to figure it out. I think kids in 2-4 grade would love to read this book as well as the illustrations. ( )

This book is about Juana, a little girl who lives in Colombia with her parents. Sheloves many things, like brussell sprouts, school, and her dog, Lucas. One thing she doesn't love is learning English, but when she is faced with a fun trip to a place where knowing English is important, she has 2 choices: learn it, or don't go. This book is so fun, and Juana really keeps the reader engaged. This book would be good for students who are bilingual, because it gives them something to connect to. ( )
