This story is a fun tale about The Gold Miner’s Daughter. Pa and Gracie Pearl have fallen on hard times in their gold mining land. There is no gold to be found and to make matters worse they have to pay the rent to their mean landlord Mr. Bigglebottom by sunset or he'll take their land, house, and forced Gracie Pearl to marry him. Gracie Pearl searches the town high and low running into some familiar fairytale friends such as Goldilocks, the Three Bears, Rapunzel, and The Three Little Pigs. They work to help each other out but Gracie Pearl comes up empty-handed when it comes to the gold. Gracie Pearl returns home and Mr. Bigglebottom is ready to take her as his bride but there is a struggle, and all of a sudden Pa and Gracie hit gold or close enough. They hit oil and the oil sends Mr. Bigglebottom sky high. Pa and Gracie lived happily ever after spending the rest of their days living off the riches of their oil. ( )

I enjoyed reading this story. In the front tab of the book there are pictures, as the students read along whenever they see a picture they are encouraged to say a catchy phrase. The story is about a father and his daughter who are gold diggers. They owe money to Mr. Bigglebottom and if they can't pay him back, Mr. Bigglebottom wants to marry the daughter. The young girl disapproves and sets off to find gold. Throughtout the story readers are shown famous folklore characters like Rapunzel and Rumpelstiltskin. Eventually Mr. Bigglebottom returns to take his bride and after a quick altercation, Mr. Bigglebottom is swept up in "black gold", also known as oil. This would be fun to read to students when disussing oil in science class. ( )

Genre: Fairy tales
Audience: Pre k-3
This is a fractured fairy tale, where the protagonist Gracie Pearl, a coal miners daughter meets different characters from fairy tales on her adventurous journey in search of gold. Ultimately she finds oil in the South west and becomes rich. It is a great spin on traditional fairytales set in the gold mining south west. ( )
