I found this one to be rather insipid. Teenage melodrama. Did not connect with the characters, especially the shifting partners. C'mpn Jack, for crying out loud: choose a girl already. Ending better than the story. ( )

This book is amazing and it is so fucking rough. If Gillian Flynn and Lucky McKee got together to write a YA novel, it would come out like this. McGinnis creates dread in this book like a hammer held over your neck for three hundred pages and even though it couldn't have ended any other way than how it did, I was still completely gutted. A million content warnings do apply, just to get that out of the way. Basically if it sucks and you can think of it, it's at least referenced in this book (attempted rape, torture, child molestation, cruelty to animals, graphic violence, parental neglect). But it also has some of the best depictions of female friendship and ultimately female solidarity that I've read in a YA novel in a long time. There is an excellently-written romance between Alex and Jack in the center of this book but don't fool yourself, the real important relationship is between Alex and Peekay, and McGinnis knows it. There are some missteps in places, mostly when the drama is cranked up to 11 and the dialogue just goes over-the-top, but I still cried like a fucking baby at the end and I'm not sorry. I don't know if I can wholeheartedly recommend this to everyone because it is raw in parts but if you read the description and think that it sounds good, it totally and completely is. ( )

So good. So shocking. ( )

"But boys will be boys, our favorite phrase that excuses many things, while the only thing we have for the opposite gender is women, said with disdain and punctuated with an eye roll."

Two stars for McGinnis flipping the script and allowing for a female vigilante hero. Down marks for much of the rest of The Female of the Species. The three main character narrators all seem to have the same voice and it is grating and overly earnest. Despite the high-minded quote above, McGinnis herself seems to play into negative stereotypes of females and males alike and of teenagers in particular. Any character trying to rise above or break norms is punished and vilified in these pages. Jack and Park, held aloft as some of the "good guys," are in fact repulsive in both language and act. Branley, "the hot one," is a sad sad caricature with no depth. The Female of the Species sits at the height of hypocrisy, blasting a society steeped in unfairness, all the while laying into tired tropes of violence against women, female cattiness, and low expectations for male behavior. This book was glorious and brutal and thrilling and heartbreaking and wrong. But SO right. You can always count on McGinnis to emotionally destroy you. If you need to cry, she’s your girl. If you need a lift and some strength, she’s your girl, too. Officially crushing on this author. (Is it wrong that I plan to use this book as my defense in court if I ever go on a rampage?) Trigger Warnings. ( )
