This is a really entertaining supernatural fantasy/horror novel, the combination of young protagonists, vampires, demons and a rural English setting making it read a little like Phil Rickman doing Buffy. The action moves along at a good pace and there are some nicely creepy moments. It never gets out and and out scary, playing more to the dark fantasy side of things, with supernatural characters as sympathetic as the human ones at times.
It definitely feels like the first book in a series, setting things up nicely for future stories, but that doesn’t stop it being a satisfying read in its own right. ( )

The intriguing title stirred my initial interest in this supernatural fantasy/horror story. A couple of chapters in I got that jolt you feel when a story reels you in and I was desperate to find out what would happen next to the Davenport family, especially Gabriel, the titular character. Early on the story elicited that delicious sense of dread when you know something wicked is coming the characters’ way.

With well drawn characters, a plot full of secrets and dark turns and oodles of atmosphere, due to the author's excellent descriptive powers, I was thoroughly entertained. The use of multiple points of view can sometimes be a difficult thing to master in a debut but this author used them to full advantage to keep up a thrill-inducing pace. Judicious reveals and a rising sense of menace kept me glued to the story right through to the very end. Bravo to Beverly Lee! ( )

A delightful little origin story taking advantage of the historic atmosphere of spooky England.
Looking forward to read, where Gabriel Davenport is going next. ( )

No suelo leer terror, pero esta novela ha conectado conmigo desde el principio. La historia me ha gustado mucho, sus personajes e incluso el final de la historia, por lo inesperado! ( )

If you've read this book already, then you will recognize I have the wrong colored feathers falling, but this just worked so perfectly! If you have not read The Making of Gabriel Davenport and you're in to paranormal, supernatural thrillers, then you should get it when you take your next book budget for a ride. I can happily say, this book put me in mind of Alfred Hitchcock! There was something going on
So the story is about more than a young man. It's about a process and revenge. And maybe even a bit of young adult attitude and the stealing of a soul- a lot went on and came together perfectly. You see, Gabriel lives in The Manor, a place that studies the paranormal and supernatural. Each resident, other than the curator (Carver), has a talent that assists in discovering and possibly resolving unnatural occurrences. While there, he's continuously observed by things unseen. He's also under protection - been under protection since infancy and never told why.

While he's dealing with such secrets and insecurities, his mother is tucked away in a room in the same home, completely disconnected from reality. Or is she? Things talk to her and convince her to do things, where the ones who care for her can't even carry on a conversation! Gabriel's father, dead fifteen years, decided to pay everyone a visit too. HOW DOES THIS ALL COME TOGETHER?!! Sounds crazy, I know and you don't exactly get all of the answers, thanks to the ending, but I have a feeling I'll be finding out as soon as the follow-up hits shelves and Kindle!

Be sure you grab yourself a copy of The Making of Gabriel Davenport as soon as you can. Find out what all the hubbub is about! On to a new read.
