11/04/2020 edit - downgraded to three stars not for any particular reason, just because I wanted to give it three stars at the time and talked myself out of it but as more time as gone on I realize it really is three stars for me.
—————————————————————————

probably closer to 3.5 stars but a three star rating seems too low. This was a very easy quick reading for me. I was really enjoying myself through the first part of the story but the progression of the story went places that I didn't love and there is definitely some insta-love in this story that I didn't enjoy.

I've owned this book since it came out four years ago and never really felt too much pull to pick it up, even when it was getting really positive reviews. I am glad that I finally did get to reading it, though I do think I would have enjoyed this more if I had read it back when I was 16. At the beginning of this book, I really enjoyed the examination of what it may be like to live in a sort of utopia but as the "plot" took over, I found myself caring less and less.

I definitely liked Citra more than Rowan which made reading some parts of this book annoying to me. I think in some ways, Rowans storyline is supposed to be the more emotionally impactful one but I just didn't get much out of it. I thought his arc was interesting enough for a YA book like this but it just never gripped me. I did like Citra's storyline more but nothing about her plot really surprised me either.

I thought the plot of this book was fine and I did mostly enjoy it. Like I said, at no point did I find it unpredictable or surprising. This fit the mode of a lot of other YA books I've read which made it pretty easy to predict some of the main plot twists. I don't think predictability is necessarily a bad thing and I think my ambiguity around my enjoyment of this plot more came from my lack of interest in one of the characters and not just because I predicted some plot twists. I also think this book fell into some of the traps of plot points and tropes that are common in YA that a lot of people, including myself, don't really love.

I also didn't really like where the relationship between Citra and Rowan ended up (spoilers ahead) I don't understand why, after spending so much time apart, they ended up falling in love. Even when they were together, I didn't see any connection between them that went beyond friendship. I can understand bonding that happens when two people are in a similar difficult situation but I don't think that should be enough that they're saying "I love you" to each other by the end of the book.

I think at some point I will read the next book in the series because I did mostly have a fine time reading this and I am intrigued to see how this story will develop. However, I don't currently own the next one so I don't know exactly when I will get to it. ( )

Another great story from Neal Shusterman. Dealing with an often unexplored side of immortality - how do you control population growth? How do you deal with the burnout and apathy that comes from knowing you'll never die and can always be young again? - Scythe is a a fast-paced, fun, and philosophical read. The romance, while there from around the beginning, is never heavy handed and doesn't interfere with the main plot. While I would have been content just reading about two kids apprenticed to be scythes, the corruption plot that Shusterman brings in is amazing, and, again, realistic. ( )

This concept was so intriguing right from the beginning. ( )

This probably says more than I wish it did about me, but I started reading this book and found myself in the middle of feelings I didn't like. I'll just start by saying that, before this, the only book that has really scared me was Inkheart. All the others just intrigued me.

But I started this book after reading another article about the Parkland Shooter and I couldn't.
I
just
couldn't.

I didn't want to read a book about death. I didn't want to read about rules for death. It seemed to trivialize suffering and offer me a window into minds I didn't want to see.

And YES. I am aware that it probably doesn't continue that way. I read enough of the blurb on the back to guess that it might not. But I wasn't in a mental place to visit the land for however long that it didn't. So I stopped. And I felt a little like there must be something wrong with me because my triggers are so close to the surface right now. Maybe there is.

A man once wrote (and was performed as saying) "Never apologize. It's a sign of weakness."
I disagree with him in most instances, but I think here that it would be. I wish the world had captivated me like it had so many. But no apologies. It didn't.
