West Cork, Ireland, 1900. The year marks the start of a new century, and the birth of three very different women: Kitty Deverill, the flame-haired Anglo-Irish daughter of the castle, Bridie Doyle, the daughter of the Irish cook and Celia Deverill, Kitty's flamboyant English cousin. Together they grow up in the dreamy grounds of the family's grand estate, Castle Deverill. Yet their peaceful way of life is threatened when Ireland's struggle for independence reaches their isolated part of the country. A bastion of British supremacy, the castle itself is in danger of destruction as the war closes in around it, and Kitty, in love with the rebel Jack O'Leary and enflamed by her own sense of patriotism, is torn between loyalty to her Anglo-Irish family and her deep love of Ireland and Jack. Wrenched apart by betrayal, their world turned to ash, the girls' friendship seems all but lost as they are swept to different parts of the globe. Yet, they have one thing in common: a fierce and unwavering longing for Castle Deverill and all the memories contained within it.… (mer)

I barely made it through the book so I cannot fathom why anyone would wish to be subjected to an entire trilogy of this sort of thing.

Thanks to Simon&Schuster who were disorganized enough to send me two copies of this book for review. ( )

Het is heel mooi verhalend geschreven en je waant jezelf echt in een kasteel in Ierland.
De verhaallijn is eerder traag maar heeft me wel van begin tot eind kunnen boeien. ( )

Kitty, Celia and Bridie are three young girls growing up in the Irish countryside when Ireland was still under British rule. Kitty is Anglo-Irish, Celia is her cousin and English and Bridie is the daughter of the cook in the castle that KItty's grandparents live in, Castle Deverill. So there are great differences in their station but they remain close friends for quite some time. If you were a fan of Downton Abbey you will recognize the implications for stories in this set-up.

Kitty is the youngest child of four and for some reason her mother hates to have her around. Thus Kitty spends a lot of time with her grandmother with whom she shares not just physical characteristics but also an ability to see ghosts, fairies, spirits and leprechauns. Kitty also plays with the cook's daughter, Bridie, a great deal. During the summers the English Deverills come to enjoy the Irish countryside and Celia is taken into the fold with Kitty and Bridie. Kitty rejects the label of Anglo-Irish and proclaims that she is Irish. She is fiercely supportive of the drive for Irish independence. Bridie's brothers are also supporters of the Irish fight for freedom as is Kitty and Bridie's friend, Jack. Kitty's mother is busy trying to get Kitty's older sisters married off to the right sort of men and she spends months in England. Kitty's father has a mistress and his horses and his bottle so he doesn't miss his wife much. However, this means that Kitty is given a lot of freedom. As the granddaughter of the local lord she is free to go where she likes and she conveys arms and messages about the countryside for the rebels. She is also free to spend a lot of time with Jack and they fall in love. This is a blow to Bridie who loves Jack also. When she learns that Jack and Kitty are in love she is heartbroken and Kitty's father happens to catch her at a weak moment. They have a brief liason but when Bridie becomes pregnant she is packed off to a convent in Dublin and then to America after she has given birth. More adventures for all three girls ensue and will continue in another two books.

I found Kitty's grandmother to be quite entertaining. She is given to drinking cannabis tea because it calms her nerves and she dispenses it to her family quite often. The idea of these genteel ladies and gentlemen sitting in the rooms high as a kite really made me smile. It is no wonder that she saw ghosts all around. ( )

Kitty Deverill has always loved Ireland and her beloved family home, Castle Deverill. But, she is not Irish, she is Anglo-Irish and while she loves Ireland and its people, she is an outsider in a dangerous, rebellious land. As Kitty grows from a spirited young girl into a fiery young woman, she must decide what is most important in her life and where her life will eventually lead. Will she ever see her childhood best friend, Bridie, the castle servant turned ladies maid? Will she ever marry the love of her life since early childhood, Jack O'Leary, despite their differences in class, religion, and heritage? Will their family ever escape the curse placed upon them in 1662...that the Deverill heirs will never rest and be forced to live out all eternity in Castle Deverill as wandering spirits?

This was a fantastic book! I read it in 3 days and now I cannot wait to see what happens to Jack, Kitty, Bridie, Michael, and all the other characters that I have become fascinated with! Apparently this is a 3 book series and I cannot wait until the next 2 are released! I love the history of the novel as well as the supernatural aspects of it! It makes it so very interesting and leaves you wanting more! Thank you LibraryThing and William Morrow/HarperCollins Publishers for the advanced copy of this book! It took me awhile to read it, but it was well worth the wait and I anxiously await the next 2 books in the series! ( )

HarperCollins Publishers says, “a powerful story of love, loyalty, and friendship, The Girl in the Castle is an exquisitely written novel set against the magical, captivating landscape of Ireland.”
