Jack might be the only kid in the world who's dreading summer. But he's got a good reason: summer is when his single mom takes a second job and leaves him at home to watch his autistic kid sister, Maddy. It's a lot of responsibility, and it's boring, too, because Maddy doesn't talk. Ever. But then, one day at the flea market, Maddy does talk -- to tell Jack to trade their mom's car for a box of mysterious seeds. It's the best mistake Jack has ever made. What starts as a normal little garden out back behind the house quickly grows up into a wild, magical jungle with tiny onion babies running amok, huge, pink pumpkins that bite, and, on one moonlit night that changes everything... a dragon.… (mer)

children's graphic novel (alien plants vs. Jack, his homeschooled friend, and his autism-spectrum sister). ( )

I liked the story better than the art of this graphic novel. I think Lilly is my favorite character, she brings a very sensible and scientific approach to thinking about the magic in the book. ( )

What starts as a reimagining of the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale turns into so much more in this new series by Hatke. Characters are believable and interesting, world building is phenomenal here like in most of Hatke's work and there's just enough of a taste to want more. Pay close attention to some of the supporting characters in this one. Absolutely fantastic. ( )

Jack lives with his mom, who works two jobs to keep the family afloat, and his younger sister Maddy, who doesn't talk. At a flea market, Jack and Maddy buy a box of mysterious seed packets (from a character that looks familiar if you've read Zita the Spacegirl): "The thing that will change your life forever....You want to change you life. Whaddya say, Jack?"

At home, Jack and Maddy plant the seeds, and a fantastical - and dangerous - garden grows. After a narrow escape, Jack burns the garden down, but then Maddy plants the final, black seed packet, and disappears, and Jack and their home-schooled neighbor Lilly (who's pretty good with a sword) go after her.
