Winner of the Randolph Caldecott Medal and the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award Jean-Michel Basquiat and his unique, collage-style paintings rocketed to fame in the 1980s as a cultural phenomenon unlike anything the art world had ever seen. But before that, he was a little boy who saw art everywhere: in poetry books and museums, in games and in the words that we speak, and in the pulsing energy of New York City. Now, award-winning illustrator Javaka Steptoe's vivid text and bold artwork echoing Basquiat's own introduce young readers to the powerful message that art doesn't always have to be neat or clean--and definitely not inside the lines--to be beautiful.… (mer)

This book is about the life of Puerto Rican-Haitian American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. It mentions Basquiat's art and talks about the early steps of his artistic journey. This book is a great book to teach students about art and its' history. In addition, this book mentions multi-cultural life and the characteristics of it which could be eye opening to students as they learn about life different from their own. ( )

This award-winning picture book shows the development of the young artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. This picture book would be a great book for younger grades and shows them that even though you might not be great or perfect at something yet, if you put your heart into it then you can do amazing things. This picture book shows the character development of Basquiat and what he has to go through before he eventually becomes a recognized artist. This book has a great them for children. ( )

The life story of Jean-Michel Basquiat from his days as a young child in Brooklyn lying on the floor drawing beside his mother, to a young man in a splattered green jumpsuit painting on the Lower Eastside to a famous artist in expensive (but still splattered) suits.
This book has many themes, such as the importance of being true to yourself even if you are a bit different. (Jean-Michel's art is described as not clean, not in the lines but somehow beautiful.) It also touches upon mental health, as it references that his mother's mind is not well and she can no longer live with them. it shows the powerful love of family. (Even though, his mother can no longer live with them, she is still a powerful figure in his life.)
It also tells us that art is healing. When Jean-Michel is afraid after an accident, his mother gives him an anatomy book, and he draws the bones and body parts over and over until he is no longer scared. Finally, it teaches us that art is everywhere.
The book ends with an afterword: "More About Jean-Michel Basquiat."

This book is about Jean-Michel Basquiat's life and how he becomes a famous artist. He goes through hardships and trials that get him to where we is in life now. It is a great way to show children that one can do anything you set your mind to. It may not come easy but nothing does and to push through hardships is a part of life. The other thing is this book is a great way to incorporate art in a book.
