In a style reminiscent of nineteenth-century authors, Forever Gentleman is a sweeping saga of suspense, romance, mystery, and music. Travel back in time and experience Victorian London at its best and worst--a city of beauty and brilliance, and a city steeped in filth and despair. Meet Nathan Sinclair, a struggling young architect and gifted pianist who lives in the two vastly different worlds, mingling in high society while dwelling in suffocating debt and poverty. While performing at a gathering of London's elite, Nathan meets Jocelyn Charlesworth, a breathtakingly beautiful but temperamental celebrity heiress. He is smitten, though she publicly humiliates him; their paths will intersect again in a most shocking manner.Meanwhile, Nathan makes the acquaintance of Regina Lancaster, a woman of remarkable inner beauty, despite her pedestrian appearance. He must decide whether to follow his heart and pursue Regina, or flee England altogether to avoid imprisonment from a miserly creditor. In his darkest hour, Nathan is offered a tantalizing proposition that might change everything, but that comes at considerable risk. Nathan must play his role perfectly, or he may lose his reputation, livelihood, and very life to the powerful echelons of Victorian society.Full of unexpected twists and turns, the book races towards a thrilling climax that will determine Nathan's ultimate destiny.… (mer)

I received this as a Librarything Early Reviewer. While I have an interest in the period, "Forever Gentleman" isn't of a genre I would usually pick up. But I am happy I did receive a copy. The story is engaging and the author's attention to detail and description of the mid-Victorian era helps it to come alive. Although there are places when the scene setting runs on a little, and made me feel like I was reading a text book rather than a novel; these are infrequent and not overly distracting.

Thank you Ronald for the opportunity to read your work. ( )

I will start off my review by complementing Colton on his stunning focus on architecture and his meticulous research to create the 1896-70 Victorian setting for his book - from the music of the period, the plays being performed in London at the time, the existence of the fine French restaurant Verrey's, to the details of the creation of London's sewer system and the prison Coldbath Fields. For that reason, this book may appeal to readers seeking historical accuracy or lovers of music in general, given the wealth of information contained in this book. Sadly, I am more of a character/plot appreciator and that is where I found this story to have some shortcomings. I found it difficult to appreciate any of the characters at their face values: Jocelyn is too perfect, Regina to humble, the Duke of Wilmont too driven - seriously, the man's actions are of an obsessive - compulsive nature second to none! - and Nathan, just a little to pat for my tastes. Yes, there is a rather interesting twist to the plot that I was not expecting but it only slightly elevated my thoughts on this one.

As an additional concern - that I hope is merely a technical glitch associated with the early reviewer e-book copy I received - Jocelyn and Nathan tend to revert to the French language for some of their dialogue. The e-book copy provided hyperlinks to what I hoped were English translations of the French but the links were not operable in the e-book copy I had and did not take me to the English references stored at the back of the book (as I discovered once I reached the end of the story) so there are about 100+ French phrases that I was not able to understand while reading the story.

Lastly, the book could have used with a ruthless editor. The story could have been succinctly captured in half to the space and with less repetition of how wondrous Jocelyn is as a beauty and how "odorous" London as a city was a that time.

A story that has a lot of promise, but didn't really follow through on the execution for me as, under the direction of a good editor, this book could have been a tantalizing story in half the page count and as a more tightly woven story. ( )

Really delightful if perhaps sometimes overly long enjoyable historical in old London - his escapes from creditors go on too long and too many times - and I suppose I have a complaint about the woman who he maintains a good friendship with despite the great characterisationsShe is far too saintly and this impacts a lot on the story - he is destitute to begin with and she welcomes him even though he appears lower class- all this changes as the race to find him from ancestors and thugs across London. His true qualities shine through and he chooses an honourable and elegant way out of a rather contrived dilemma - so really good an entertaining ( )

I received this book as an Early Reviewer. Since others have given a good synopsis of what the book is about, I will just describe my impressions of the book. Going in, I was expecting something along the lines of a Jane Austen novel. And while there are indeed some echoes of Austen in the lively bantering between the characters, I felt the book resembled Dickens even more, in scope and plot. The main character, Nathan Sinclair, is a typical Dickens' nearly perfect hero, along the lines of Nicholas Nickleby. Regina Lancaster is likewise an almost perfect love interest in the Dickens tradition. Like many of Dickens' works, the book felt as if it could have been serialized, with many cliff-hangers along the way. Some parts, especially the first third of the book felt too long and drawn-out to me. The French dialogue, when used, was frustrating for me as I don't know French and the translations weren't accessible until the end of the chapter. But the author obviously did his homework. His descriptions of the London of that time, the architecture and music were detailed and felt authentic. I felt like I knew and cared about the main characters and couldn't wait to find out how the the book would end. So overall, I say kudos to the author! Well done! ( )

Received this book from Library Thing through early review from Anaphora Literary Press. Absolutely loved it. There were a number of twists and turns during the story and a big plus, it was unpredictable. It represented trust, honesty and the depths of love. Life does not always turn out as planned. ( )

Forever Gentleman is a historical novel set in Victorian London and blends the author’s love for architecture, music and history as it steeps its story in the sights, sounds, and flavors of the era and follows Renaissance man Nathan, whose struggles as an architect and a musician bring him in contact with the ladies and lords of high society.

Nathan’s gifts bring love in unexpected places; but they also are challenged by his economic misfortunes and by threats that give him clear choices between romance or seeking safety in another country. From the squalors of Debtor’s Prison to judges, courtroom dramas, and the beckoning possibilities of a new life that takes his beloved piano concertos to new heights, Forever Gentleman is about a young man finding his place in society and the social trials and snafus (and romance) that confront him along the way.

Readers who like atmospheric, sweeping historical sagas cemented by the personal goals, observations, and challenges of protagonists who interact on many levels will relish Forever Gentleman’s ability to turn out a rollicking good read while remaining true to the history and influences of its times.

It’s a romance, it’s a mystery, and it’s a history all wrapped into one satisfyingly beautiful production, and is highly recommended for anyone who appreciates a depth and attention to detail that results in a powerful story line.

Forever Gentleman by Roland Colton is a historical fiction novel chronicling the fortunes, and misfortunes of Nathan Sinclair. Nathan is a talented architect, and sometimes musician, living in London in the 1860s. Yet, all is not well for young Mr. Sinclair. He faces a debt thanks to a client who has been unable to pay, leaving him at the mercy of a loan broker. Still, Nathan does not despair, though he desperately seeks to pay off his debt. Then, while giving an impromptu concert at the home of a wealthy aristocrat, Nathan runs into a startlingly beautiful woman. Little does he know, his encounter with Jocelyn Charlesworth will change his life drastically, and force Nathan to choose between true love and the fulfilment of all of his wildest dreams. All the while, outside forces and unexpected encounters threaten the life of our main character. Will he manage to come out of it on the side of honor, or greed?

It has been some time since I found myself swept away in a piece of historical fiction. Mr. Colton brings his readers directly into the world of the wealthy and the poor, delineating the distinctions with great dexterity. I love that the main story was told from Nathan’s perspective, as I could really get into his head. Still, the ending surprised me and deviated from what I usually expect in historical novels of this type. I wasn’t sure if I liked Nathan at times, as he seemed to seek fame more than honor, but this gave him a flaw. I appreciated that he wasn’t perfect, and it made me empathize with his plight. Forever Gentleman by Roland Colton is not a novel to rush, but each page is to be savored as he paints a delicate picture of Nathan’s life, while still keeping the plot balanced. Easily one of the best books I have read so far this year.
