"In April 1916, Nell Richardson and Alice Burke set out from New York City in a little yellow car, embarking on a bumpy, muddy, unmapped journey ten thousand miles long. They took with them a teeny typewriter, a tiny sewing machine, a wee black kitten, and a message for Americans all across the country: Votes for Women! The women's suffrage movement was in full swing, and Nell and Alice would not let anything keep them from spreading the word about equal voting rights for women. Braving blizzards, deserts, and naysayers--not to mention a whole lot of tires stuck in the mud--the two courageous friends made their way through the cities and towns of America to further their cause. One hundred years after Nell and Alice set off on their trip, Mara Rockliff revives their spirit in a lively and whimsical picture book, with exuberant illustrations by Hadley Hooper bringing their inspiring historical trek to life"--… (mer)

The story of the 1916 road trip around America that Nell Richardson and Alice Burke took to spread the message, VOTES FOR WOMEN!

This is a fun introduction to the women's suffragist movement and a nice depiction of two women on a mission (one where they do not drive off a cliff at the end). Also depicts the challenges of early road trips in America when there were few good roads, maps, or gas stations. Written for the K-2 crowd.

I borrowed this book via Hoopla and didn't realize it was an audio version. The enunciation was very clear and there are background sounds to help set the stage. I'll have to look for a hard copy of this book the next time I'm at the library or bookstore because I adore the cover image and want to see scene depictions.

Nell and Alice travel across the country to advance their suffragist message. Told with all of the energy these two woman must have had, it is an accessible entry point into a complex topic. Additional Information, Source Notes, Further Reading Suggestions.

In April of 1916, two women, Nell Richardson and Alice Burke, along with a kitten, set out driving a little yellow car from New York City all around America in order to help women secure the right to vote. Although they stumbled upon some bumps in the road, these two brave women kept their eyes on the prize and never let anything get in the way of their very important mission.
This story spoke to me as a woman, and it helped me to admire and appreciate everything these women did , especially since they were so brave and never backed down. As mentioned at the end of the book, yellow stood for Votes for Women everywhere in the United States. Yellow also symbolizes happiness and warmth and is one of the most cheerful colors of the rainbow. ( )

I consider this book to be a good learning style for women's voting. There are two reasons why the book is fascinating for my reading experience. First, the language is relevant and comprehensive throughout the entire story. I liked it that the book identified the names of each state that Alice Burke and Nell Richardson traveled to. Specifically, the language shortly described the setting at South Carolina, where the characters were at an all-yellow lunch. Another reason is the illustration. The illustrator Hadley Hooper created brilliant and appropriate artwork. In particular, the illustration provided a map of the U.S.A. to show Nell's and Alice's path, which included a visual bank. I believe that it is an essential element for Mara Rockliff's story. Also, the U.S.A. map was supportive in allowing a reader to learn which direction the characters traveled state-by-state. The book's main message was about using perseverance to accomplish a huge quest. The two women made a great journey around the U.S.A. country to help women earn the right of equality through voting. AROUND AMERICA TO WIN THE VOTE: TWO SUFFRAGISTS, A KITTEN AND 10,000 MILES is a true story about the journey of two suffragists, Nell Richardson and Alice Burke, and their cross county journey to speak out in favor of "Vote's for Women!" The book is cute and funny and the illustrations are adorable. The reader really gets a sense of Nell and Alice's dedication to their cause. I also appreciated the article included in the back of the book written by Alice Burke herself in 1916 and the extra information about the women's suffrage movement. ( )
