Being a cop runs in Billy Harney's family. The son of Chicago's Chief of Detectives whose twin sister, Patty, also followed in their father's footsteps, there's nothing Billy won't give up for the job, including his life. Left for dead alongside his tempestuous former partner and a hard-charging assistant district attorney out for blood, Billy miraculously survives. But he remembers nothing about the events leading up to the shootout. Charged with double murder and desperate to clear his name, Billy retraces his steps to get to the bottom of what happened. When he discovers the existence of a little black book that everyone who's anyone in Chicago will stop at nothing to get their hands on, Billy suspects it contains the truth that will either set him free ... or confirm his worst fears.… (mer)

I can't decide if I liked or hated this book - and you can't really review a thriller without giving spoilers - but I thought some parts were predictable (I called one but then it turned out different than I thought) and I called another completely, though it still made for a good book I think 109 chapters in 418 pages was a little much - why all the chapters? I hate that. I didn't much like the side players - Kate was a **insert bad word** and Amy I found to be a bit annoying - I did like the rest though I think the book is made to make you hate people. Overall a decent ride! ( )

On the back cover there is a statement by James Patterson "I believe this book - The Black Book - is the best work I've done in twenty years". Strong words and I have agree with him. I read James Patterson for fun and basically view this work as mind candy. The Black Book is head and shoulders above his recent work. The characters are truly interesting, the plot pulls the reader in, the twists and turns are realistic and the story (always James Patterson's strong point) is truly engrossing. Until the last few pages it was hard to get a handle on who might be the culprit and even at the end there were surprises. Having lived in Chicago (where the story is set) for several years it felt like someone who lived and breathed the police and political environment, which did reflect the importance of David Ellis contributions to the story.

If we hadn't been traveling and visiting family would have finished this book in a day or two as I really didn't want to set it down. I don't care whether or not you are a James Patterson fan, if you are a fan of police based mysteries you should put this book on your 'must read' list. ( )

Actually, a pretty good detective novel. Hard to come up with something new, but pretty impressed by this. Entertaining read. ( )

Good summer read. Quick and complicated. You are guessing to the end who is really guilty of taking bribes. ( )

Patterson/Ellis do not disappoint in this fast-paced novel full of corruption, deceit, and suspense. After raiding a brothel, and being warned it may have been a bad move, Detective Billy Harney's life is spinning out of control. The black book is missing, witnesses are being killed, and he is in the center of it all. He doesn't know who he can trust, or is it him they can't trust? This story had me guessing the whole time, and the ending was so unexpected and unpredictable. Great read! ( )
