In First Day of School, there is a mouse named Cindy. She is going to her school for the first time. She is nervous, but also happy. She becomes afraid when her mom left because she did not know anyone. This book illustrates how most kids feel about going to school for the first time on the first day.

This book could be viewed as going to school for the first time, but also as going to a new school. I was given this book when I left one school and went to another for 1st grade. I like this book because it shows the kids there is not anything to fear at school, but it also shows the parents that it is normal for their child to experience these feelings on their first day.

If I were to use this book in a classroom, I could have the children tell of what their first day of pre-k or kindergarten was like for them, how it was the first day that year, and how it is for them every year on the first day of school. Is it exciting or scary? Do they become nervous or happy as the day arrives? I also could have them get into groups and draw pictures that connect just as Cindy’s did with her new friend’s artwork.
