( ) Richards and Newman create an homage to the classic stories of Ezra Jack Keats while creating something completely new and delightful. The scene opens with a scene of a zoo and a small boy's question. "Mom? Can one balloon make an elephant fly?" Mom, distracted by her cell phone, absently answers "no" but then stops to pay attention to Evan and tells him that yes, one balloon can make Evan's (toy) elephant fly. But Evan has other ideas in mind...while Mom ties balloons to his toy animals, Evan distributes balloons to his new zoo friends and when they set his toys free to float a whole other group of friends are floating as well... Newman's evocative charcoal illustrations have thick lines and rich colors and capture the quiet humor of this dual story, while showing a mother who, though distracted, is still paying attention to her imaginative son even if she doesn't fully enter into his creative viewpoint. Not only the illustrations but the whole tenor of a book - the peek into a child's inner life and perspective and a gentle sense of humor - present a story that is sure to be a modern classic comparable to Ezra Jack Keats' stories. Verdict: A lovely book for storytime or sharing one-on-one. Recommended. His mother, thinking that he is referring to a real elephant, tells him it can't. Then she realizes (or thinks she does) that he is referring to his toy elephant, and takes a different tack. This continues as they pass and discuss the other zoo residents... Can One Balloon Make an Elephant Fly? offers an interesting look at perspective, depicting a mother-son conversation in which each is really referring to a different reality, despite seemingly talking about the same thing. The mother, roused from her cell-phone perusal, thinks that she realizes what her son means, and, attempting to join him in his game, begins attaching balloons to the (toy) animals he mentions. He, in the meantime, is very much in earnest, referring to real animals, and attaching balloons to them in turn. Each remains oblivious, despite the connection of their conversation, to the reality the other is referencing. There is a dry humor here that has appeal, although I wouldn't describe this as a 'funny' book. I appreciated the artwork, done in charcoal and crayon, as much as the text, and liked that the mother and son are depicted as African-American, without this being in any way the focus of the story. This is a story about perspective, about converging and diverging realities, that just happens to have an African-American cast. Recommended to anyone looking for fun stories for younger children. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
