"John Kaag is a dispirited young philosopher at sea in his marriage and his career when he stumbles upon West Wind, a ruin of an estate in the hinterlands of New Hampshire that belonged to the eminent Harvard philosopher William Ernest Hocking. Hocking was one of the last true giants of American philosophy and a direct intellectual descendent of William James, the father of American philosophy and psychology, with whom Kaag feels a deep kinship. It is James's question "Is life worth living?" that guides this remarkable book. The books Kaag discovers in the Hocking library are crawling with insects and full of mold. But he resolves to restore them, as he immediately recognizes their importance. Not only does the library at West Wind contain handwritten notes from Whitman and inscriptions from Frost, but there are startlingly rare first editions of Hobbes, Descartes, and Kant. As Kaag begins to catalog and read through these priceless volumes, he embarks on a thrilling journey that leads him to the life-affirming tenets of American philosophy-- self-reliance, pragmatism, and transcendence-- and to a brilliant young Kantian who joins him in the restoration of the Hocking books. Part intellectual history, part memoir, American Philosophy is ultimately about love, freedom, and the role that wisdom can play in turning one's life around"--… (mer)

Part intellectual musing, part personal memoir, this overview of the American philosophies of self-reliance, pragmatism, and transcendence takes to the woods and tells the story of a priceless library discovered and its impact on a scholar's personal journey to a fuller life. It reinforces my love of books and makes me want to read more Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman... ( )

Odd book, partly a memoir of a young troubled philosopher going through a abandoned library of philosophy books in NH, partly a history of American philosophy in the nineteenth century. Nicely written. ( )

Jahrhunderts in Amerika.

This book was a very pleasant surprise. In college, I took a philosophy course that covered Pragmatism and I read books by William James, Charles Sanders Pierce, John Dewey, Josiah Royce etc. Kaag had a strong interest in the American philosophy of the late 19th century and did an excellent job of explaining it so that the general reader could understand it. In addition, he described the personalities and lives of the various philosophers – – many of them had more interesting lives outside of their academic pursuits. Kaag's research takes place in the abandoned library of William Ernest Hocking. To be honest, reading about someone's research in a library could be very tedious and boring. But I found it very interesting – –Kaag's dedication and pursuit of information and material.

Coupled with this interesting review of American philosophy, Kaag described his own life which began to fall apart when he began his research. Kaag had a very unhappy marriage and career but slowly found solace in the lives and words of the various philosophers. Kaag's personal story had a happy ending as he found a soulmate who shared his interests and pulled him out of the depression and unhappiness that he had experienced throughout much of his life.

I bought the book and it turned out to be a good investment. I enjoyed the story and the step back in time from my college days studying Pragmatism. ( )

- a story of how Kagg found and rescued an almost abandoned library belonging to an important American philosopher
- some history of Transcendentalism and Pragmatism, America's great contributions to 18th and 19th century philosophy
- a delightful if sketchy memoir of the author's search for and finding of someone to love ( )

“American Philosophy” succeeds, not as a textbook or survey, but a spirited lover’s quarrel with the individualism and solipsism in our national thought.
