The Last Days of Video: A Novel av Jeremy Hawkins (sturlington)
sturlington: These books are not at all alike except that they both feature small-town video stores, they are both by North Carolina writers, and they are both good reads.

Okay, this ended better than I'd hoped but I'm afraid that's most of the positives I can throw out here.

Darnielle spends a lot of time setting up characters. Too much time, to be honest, especially for the very little payback you get from them.

You know a lot of details about the characters, but almost nothing about what drives them. Why did Irene fall in with the strange church? Why was Jeremy content to let it all lie? Why was Stephanie in the novel at all?

Far far too much happens off screen. I understand that the author's trying to maintain the suspense, but to never let us inside some of the events? Yeah, yeah, I get it. He's trying to parallel the experience of the mysterious videos intercut into popular movies.

Unfortunately, he gives us so little to go on, so much extraneous detail, and no solid motivations, that this book--that could have been wildly compelling--instead is mildly interesting at best, and overindulgent and meandering at worst. ( )

Freaking good. Feels like the first real spiritual successor to House of Leaves in a way. ( )

Universal Harvester by John Darnielle, author of Wolf in White Van, which was a NYT bestseller and National Book Award Nominee, could be classified as a horror novel (which I never read!), but turns into something quite different by the time it’s over. Set in a small Iowa town in the late 1990s, when video stores were still ubiquitous, it tells the strange story of people reporting weird images showing up on the VHS tapes they check out at the local Video Hut. The images interrupt the regular movie and seem dark and disturbing. Jeremy, the young man working the counter of the video rental store comes across as an aimless, disinterested character, but as the novel progresses, we see that he and his father are quietly still coming to terms with the recent fatal car accident of the matriarch of the family. The store owner becomes obsessed with the strange videos and then seems to disappear on the farm where she recognizes the scenes have taken place.

The overall tone of this novel is disquieting and eerie. It is written in three parts, and all three deal with what ultimately happened on that farm in Nevada, Iowa, as well as capturing a strong sense of place, with beautifully descriptive passages of the Iowa landscape, which becomes a character in itself. This book was reviewed in the NYT Book Review, but the Amazon reviews aren’t great. I think that it’s possible people reading it had expectations that weren’t met, as the big reveal of the mysterious images on the videos is something unexpected, yet still disturbing. I really enjoyed it for the story it told, the excellent writing and inner lives explored by some of the characters. For me, a story well told, with interesting characters and a unique perspective is worth reading, and this short novel met those requirements for me.

People usually didn't say anything when they returned their tapes to the Video Hut: in a single and somewhat graceful movement, they'd approach the counter, slide the tape toward whoever was stationed behind the register, and wheel back toward the door.

That’s what pictures are for, after all: to stand in place of the things that weren’t left behind, to bear witness to people and places and things that might otherwise go unnoticed.
