TOUGH EDDIE is a book where a little boy named Eddie has a doll house in his closet. One day when his friends were over his sister told them that he had a doll house in his closet. Eddie got very mad and then stopped talking to his friends for a while because they kept questioning him about it. Eddie was being portrayed as this tough boy trying to hide his feminine things. He was dressed as a cowboy with boots, a leather belt, and a gun. When he returned to school the next day he was paired with a girl, and during an activity a bee flew onto his apple. He was brave and stood his ground instead of running away like he wanted to. He saw the girl as well as his friends smile at him and then they started talking again, they came onto the topic of show and tell and Eddie suggests at the end that he just might bring in his doll house. The pictures in this book look to be done with colored pencils. They give detail towards facial expression and clothing. The pictures have a soft feel to them in a story that deals with gender bias. This book is a slice of life book that deals with just a snippet of Eddie's life. Overall this book is kind of confusing going back and forth if it is okay for Eddie to have a doll house. It almost suggests that it is okay if he has a doll house only if he is portrayed still as this tough little boy. I do not believe I would use this in the classroom because it shows it as if he must keep that other side of him a secret and I want my students to be able to express themselves. ( ) Tough Eddie is about a boy who plays with his other boy friends at school. One day his sister was mad at him, so she taunted him and told his friends that he plays with a doll house at home. Then his friends unfriend him until he proves himself “worthy” pf being their friend again. He proves himself “worthy” by being brave and facing the fear of a bee on his nose. The illustrations are good, and understandable. This book was not very good at getting points across about gender non-conformity issues. There is not really a good plot line in here to show that boy can play with girls’ toys and it is mostly because it is showing that Eddie has to be “tough” just by the clothes he wears, and the insect he faces. The story also shows bullying by the friends and sister, but nothing else really came from this book. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
Although Eddie appears to be a tough kid, he also plays with a dollhouse, a secret he feels he cannot reveal even to his closest friends. Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
