4 starred reviews! Orange Is the New Black meets Walter Dean Myer's Monster in this gritty, twisty, and haunting debut by Tiffany D. Jackson about a girl convicted of murder seeking the truth while surviving life in a group home. Mary B. Addison killed a baby. Allegedly. She didn't say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: a white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary and the jury made it official. But did she do it? There wasn't a point to setting the record straight before, but now she's got Ted--and their unborn child--to think about. When the state threatens to take her baby, Mary's fate now lies in the hands of the one person she distrusts the most: her Momma. No one knows the real Momma. But does anyone know the real Mary?… (mer)

October School Book Club 2019:

A super-fast read with a lot of focus on memory, childhood, child incarceration, group homes, and what happens to children who fall through the crack. Also, an interesting look at how racism can form even without being explicit, and what truly makes the mind tick.

And. Man. I can't not say it. That twist.

Woah.

I did not expect literally ANYTHING that came from this story. What brilliant writing. Incredible, highly recommended. ( )

Tragic and sad. So awful what mental illness, neglect, poverty, abuse and grief can do to people. Our entire criminal system sucks. Our social system sucks. The way we "take care" of kids, the elderly, and the mentally ill sucks. This book brings all that to life in the story of a 16-yo black girl who has been locked up since she was 9 for killing a 3-month old white baby. ( )

This showed an all too true depiction of what our country's broken systems look like for those who slip through the cracks. I hadn't expected this to be as good as it was. The narrator was great for this audiobook! I learned some things on the way about our legal system and ended up being surprised by the ending and really feel like more questions were brought up at the ending which means I'm looking for people to discuss with. ;) ( )

Stellar writing and character development, sharp dialogue and pacing, tense plot. Dark, but good, kept me wondering until the end. ( )
