There is plenty of action and plenty of dialogue between the characters in between the spy and crime story. A gripping read. While it does help to read these books in order, it isn't necessary as Baldacchi does a great job with the back story. In fact, I have read them #1, 5 and now 3. Outside the FBI building, Decker witnesses the killing of what seemed to be an innocent sub teacher. The killer then turned committed suicide. Decker, his partner, Jamison, Mars (from book 2) and a DIA agent work together to figure why the killing was done in front of the FBI building and all of the people involved. I'll admit that I have some problems with this book and the story. I'm fine with Decker's super memory, and social awkwardness, but the story in which he is the hero seemed taken from an old and bad pulp thriller. It's anachronistic and both unbelievable and predictable (if you have read enough bad books).
It might be time to drop Decker and move on to someone else. (
