This book challenges our age-old assumption that trust is merely a soft, social virtue, and instead demonstrates that it is a hard-edged, economic driver--a learnable and measurable skill that makes organizations more profitable, people more promotable, and relationships more energizing. CEO Covey informs readers how to inspire lasting trust in their personal and professional relationships, and in so doing to create unparalleled success and sustainable prosperity in every dimension of life. He shows business, government, and education leaders how to quickly and permanently gain the trust of their clients, coworkers, partners, and constituents. Like a ripple in the pond, trust begins within each of us personally, continues into our relationships, expands into our organizations, extends into our marketplace relationships, and ultimately encompasses our global society. Covey presents a road map to establish trust on every level, build character and competence, enhance credibility, and create leadership that inspires confidence.--From publisher description.… (mer)

Published 2006, so examples very dated now. Preaching to the choir, ended up skimming big chunks. ( )

"The Speed of Trust by Stephen M.R. Covey was a great book! It had a lot of good information on the different levels of trust and how to peacefully resolve conflict and restore trust. What I enjoyed about the book was that it gave practical information that could be used and how relationships that have been broken can be mended and repaired without calling the police or a parent to resolve the issue. What I learned from the book is that trust is something that should be held in high esteem and one that should be planted, grown, and worked on over the years to become a beautiful and strong plant. I learned that trust only happens when a person trusts themselves implicitly and treats themselves with respect and care and does not try to treat themselves badly. For if you do not treat yourself with trust, love and respect, how else would you treat someone with love and respect? I learned that I should treat myself with respect and trust and be honest with myself and not lie so that I can treat people with respect and trust and being honest with them always. That is what always matters. That is what this book taught me." ( )

A framework, reference guide, and useful starting point. Good enough for a business book. The framework and forced symmetries drive the discussion rather than whether or where Covey has supporting data, unique insights, or depth of understanding. This leads to long passages of filler.

Use the framework to establish a shared language about trust in business settings. Refer to sections of the book for ideas about how to improve specific skills or habits associated with trusting relationships in a "fake it till you make it" sense. The experience will teach you what the book cannot. Mine the book for it's insights, capture them, and let the rest fall away. ( )

So many truths and things that make you stop and think. I had fantastic discussions with my husband about this book. He was reading it for the group of people he works with, but we found it applicable to our relationship as well. Really good! ( )
