As World War I raged across the globe, hundreds of young women toiled away at the radium-dial factories, where they painted clock faces with a mysterious new substance called radium. Assured by their bosses that the luminous material was safe, the women themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered from head to toe with the glowing dust. With such a coveted job, these "shining girls" were considered the luckiest alive--until they began to fall mysteriously ill. As the fatal poison of the radium took hold, they found themselves embroiled in one of America's biggest scandals and a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights. Made my heart ache

What a terrific story about these amazing women who truly were heroes. Such young lives wasted at the hands of corporate greed. It is a shame what happened and I am glad that their story is being told. Please read as you will love this book and these wonderful women. ( )

TWs: radiation sickness, death, unsafe working conditions, cancer, graphic descriptions of sickness that can only be described body horror, gaslighting.

The Radium Girls is a superbly researched non-fiction work, where you can find a lot of valuable information and a deep passion for the subject matter. This historical narrative follows the group of women known as the Radium Girls, who contracted radiation sickness due to their unsafe working conditions. The women, who painted dials with radium-based paint, were instructed to shape the painting brushes with their lips, and given no safety measures. In this book Kate Moore goes deeply in their work process, the different ways the women's employers gaslighted and decieved them during their fight for justice, and the women's ultimate legacy in law and science. Be warned that the author doesn't spare the gruesome truth of their illness - some of descriptions are so graphic I'd describe them as real-life body horror.

My sole critique of the book was that at times it is quite hard to follow since Kate Moore writes about many of the women affected. This is great in terms of giving those of them, who were historically overlooked, a voice. However, it made it a bit hard to keep track of all dial painters, especially given than some were related and shared a family name.

If you want to read The Radium Girl I'd recommend checking out the audiobook since it is narrated by the author. Her voice shows how passionate she is about the story she is telling. ( )

After a slow start, the book became more and more interesting. This is the story of the women who worked painting luminous dials on watches in the early 1900's after the discovery of radium. Radium was touted as a wonderful thing bringing all kinds of health benefits.

The girls in the factories in New Jersey and in Ottawa, Illinois were almost always teenagers working at a good salary to help their families. They would put the brushes in their mouths to make a sharp point on the brush. One by one, they begin losing their teeth, then painful jaws, broken bones, etc. They were exposed to so much radium that they would actually glow in the dark and their bones would show in the dark because the radium was first attracted to calcium in the bones.

The story of these women in heartbreaking. They suffered so much and received so little. The United States Radium Company was making tons of money but the company refused to acknowledge that the girls' sicknesses were related to their work.

The majority of the book tells of the many court trials that followed. Too often the women were directed to settle out of court. The heartlessness of the corporation is horrible as they even claimed that some of the women died of syphilis.

The hardest part of the book is keeping the many names straight as many women are involved. Also, at times, I found the wording used by the author to be awkward or just unusual. However, good read about a time and circumstance that is little known ( )

This is such an important subject and I'm definitely going to come back to this amazingly well-researched book, but it's hitting me really hard, so I'm setting it aside for now. Definitely recommend, though.

The Curies discover the element radium which became the wonder drug of the medical community used in the fight of cancer tumors. It was also used to paint watch dials on soldiers' watches during WWI because the element shines bright in the dark. Young girls were eager to get these jobs at the radium-dial factories as the radium dust caused their bodies to light up and they became known as 'the shining girls'. As the girls became mysteriously ill and died, the factories were covering up the problem. The brave shining girls soon find themselves in one of the biggest scandals of America’s early 20th century. It became the groundbreaking battle for workers’ rights that started the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Federal Agency.
It is a very hard book to read as it describes girl after girl who were losing their teeth, jaws and body parts from inserting the paint brush tips full of radium in their mouths in order to better paint the watch dials. Kate Moore has done excellent research and shows how the girl's courage ultimately saved thousands of lives. I would recommend this book to those who love true historic stories. ( )
