my mother and i read both this and morrissey's autobiography, and we enjoyed this much more. :) johnny has plenty of good anecdotes, a cute sense of humor, and actual insight into his music making process. ( )

Perfectly decent autobiography covering all his career highlights, many of which I had forgotten - such as his time with The The or Modest Mouse. Marr was 23 when The Smith broke up which is astonishing. Plenty of namedropping, but he's mostly self-effacing and chuffed to have found himself where he is. Grateful for everything, but proud of the hard work he put in. It's a tough combination to pull off in an memoir, but I think he does it. Solidly entertaining, even if it has none of the flair of his main career. ( )

The well-written and compelling autobiography of British musician Johnny Marr, most famously of The Smiths. A little more than half of the book is devoted to Marr’s youth and the lead-up to his forming The Smiths. Marr has collaborated with many musicians and his passion for and love of playing the guitar at an extremely high level permeates the book. Growing up in Manchester public housing with Irish parents formed his social, political as well as musical perspectives. Known as a “political artist,” Marr still has his eyes open. “The powerful always act in favour of the privileged, and will forever treat the less fortunate in society as inferior in order to maintain quality.”

Creating a new and different sound with The Smiths was important to Marr. That extended to fashion. “We all had the same kind of clothes with slight variations, and we looked nothing like anybody else.”

Some quotes: On prog rock: “I didn’t like old-looking guys playing flutes or anything to do with dragons and robes.” On Morrissey, his Smiths partner: “We recognized in each other the same commitment and emotional need to follow our visions.”

Although I never really took to The Smiths I like Marr's solo albums. I'll follow up by reading Morrissey's autobiography next for another perspective. ( )

Johnny Marr is one of the standout guitarists of 1980s England. His band The Smiths was so successful that he has yet to live it down. In this book he makes the claim that it was in fact not the high point of his life. It is his legacy and a proud one at that but not the sole source of meaning as a musician or a man. He is very respectful to the genius talents of Morrissey, Marr says that the breakup of The Smiths was inevitable due to the personalities of he and Morrissey.
Marr has a distinctive (romantic) notion of attachment to his guitars. He says that all of his had music inside of them especially if they were owned by other gifted musicians. He says that his knack was to make his instrument sound out what he was feeling musically.
Both he and Morrissey (Autobiography) say that Hand In Glove was their great first song. I don't see things that way but I understand that it was a critical and popular success where they achieved a definite sound that was their own. Their first song that I liked was What Difference Does It Make?
The reader will be surprised at how few pages he spends on The Smiths. He said that the name came from 3 options that Morrissey suggested: The Smiths, The Smith Family and The Walking Wounded. Marr spends a fair amount of time explaining the genesis of How Soon is Now?
Marr later enjoyed working with Bryan Ferry and The Talking Heads. This book is for the Marr fan and even then it loses momentum. He was scoping out Ian McCulloch of Echo and the Bunnymen to sing in the band before he got Morrissey to commit. Marr is Irish Catholic but has religious affiliation now after his negative experience with the Catholic school system. Some teachers were supportive however. Marr spent work and holiday time in Los Angeles and elsewhere in California. He was married in San Francisco.
Excellent photos, thorough index (a rarity) and large font size for easy reading. ( )
