The New International Commentary on the New Testament (NICNT) is based on careful study of the Greek text and reflects serious work in technical areas -- such as linguistics, textual criticism and historical concerns. The NICNT series flourished under the editorship of several New Testament scholars -- first Ned Stonehouse (Westminster Theological Seminary), then F. F. Bruce (University of Manchester, England) and Gordon D. Fee (Regent College, Canada) and now Joel B. Green (Fuller Theological Seminary). Newer volumes in the NICNT account for emergent emphases in biblical studies and their theological significance for God's people.

This volume replaces Leon Morris’s commentary on John in this series. Morris’s commentary has helped countless evangelicals over the years. Michaels’s volume will probably serve as a significant resource for some time to come. It is clearly written and easy to use.

In conclusion, there is much to be disappointed with in this newest contribution to the NICNT series. If, indeed, the purpose of a replacement volume in a commentary series is to bring readers up to date with scholarly developments, Michaels's commentary misses the mark in its attempt to update Morris's volume. That said, Michaels's commentary may supersede Morris's in its wealth of exegetical observations on the Greek text as well as its contribution to text-critical issues in the study of John's Gospel.
