Super believable and relatable characters, with great art. I love love loved all the fashion descriptions in particular. My only nitpick: I feel like the mom/daughter relationship in this book was realistic, but also a little too pat. Like, mom will never understand me, even though we've fought and made up and fought and made up, because mom is MOM. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but as a non-teen reader I think that dynamic falls a little flat. (As a grown up, I was like: maybe your mom is grumpy because she ALSO is stressed out about teaching at a new school and moving somewhere she hasn't lived before and she has to deal with you being stompy and angsty about it on top of that. And, obvs, I get that a tween isn't necessarily attuned to that, but as an adult reader I was all: man, I'm glad I'm not parenting a tween right now.)

On the other hand, I loved unicorn house dress wearing Oralia, because yes. (I was super hoping she'd end up with purple hair by the end. SADLY, no.) ( )

Malu is an intelligent and creative young teen who did not appreciate the family's move to Chicago. Her new principal hates her, the popular girl at her new school bullies her, and she cant seem to fit in at her new school at all; but instead of going home and crying about it she channels her feelings into creative outlets. Drawing Zines (short, self published comics and illustrations), deciding to form a band, and navigating a complex relationship with her mother are all things the "not by the book" Malu does in the story, giving the reader an insight to her mind and life. I rated this book 5 stars because frankly I love Malu as a character so much, her creativity and spunky personality made this book an absolute joy to read. It is also translated into Spanish, and features some of the drawings Malu does in the story making it an entertaining read for any level of English Proficiency. ( )

Looooove this. I will read loving stories of "weirdos" finding their place all. day. long. Its easiest sell may be, "Hey, did you like [b:Roller Girl|22504701|Roller Girl|Victoria Jamieson|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1447914095s/22504701.jpg|41951492]? (Spoiler alert: everyone does.) This is the text-novel version of that, but with punk music and a main character who's also trying to figure out her Mexican heritage!" But really any 5th-7th-grade reader of solid realistic school stories ([b:Wonder|11387515|Wonder|R.J. Palacio|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1309285027s/11387515.jpg|16319487], [b:Because of Mr. Terupt|7783920|Because of Mr. Terupt (Mr. Terupt, #1)|Rob Buyea|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1320456974s/7783920.jpg|10714283], anything by [a:Wendy Mass|99650|Wendy Mass|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1235153849p2/99650.jpg]) is going to be all over this. I added this book to the mix of YA material that describe some aspect of my high school experience (Eleanor & Park, Perks of Being A Wallflower, Nick & Norah) ( )

A charming debut about a thoughtful, creative preteen connecting to both halves of her identity.
