In The First Rule of Punk, the first rule is introduced by our protagonist's dad which is to be yourself. Malú is a Chicana, or a girl of Mexican descent, who has to navigate a new school while having to fight the school's queen bee and dress code with her punk attire. She has to path a place for her there which makes other misfits like her come together. The grade levels I would have this in classrooms that are 4th to 8th grade because it has a theme of expressing yourself, finding your identity, and how it blends with your culture that everyone can enjoy. I love this book because it really shows punk really is for everyone and how sometimes people can be erased from the narrative like Teresa Covarrubias who is just like Malú. I thought this book was a great read and found a way to turn the usual middle school tropes on their head. It was also a great book for Latina representation and was just a feel-good book. ( )

Trope-y with a twist. All the middle school mean-girl and finding a way to fit in to a new school treated with a refreshing update, weaving in Hispanic heritage, punk rock as a metaphor for expression, openness and bravery. Terrific offering for middle grades. ( )

middlegrade fiction (Lu is in 7th grade); new school/making friends/being half Mexican and liking punk music and zines but maybe not fitting in with the mostly Mexican kids. ( )

This book follows the story of Malu, a tweleve year old girl who is trying to figure out how to be herself, which is someone who loves punk rock but as she deals with that, she dissapoints her family and people around her. This story introduces the ideas of self confidence and self love and would be great for all readers and ages. She eventually fights for who she is and stands up to the people that mean the most to her in order to be who she wants to. I would use this in the classroom to introduce those ideas and to show my students that it takes courage to be who you are but that it's important to fight for yourself. ( )

This book introduces a new spin on what to do when you feel like you do not fit in a school. In the book, the main character has trouble with the new move and starting at a new school. She is not well liked or well treated at school. It makes it challenging for Malu, but instead of dwelling on the issue, she chooses to not care what they think, and dress the way she chooses. She realizes that she is spunky and different and embraces it for the best. This a great book to introduce to secondary or middle school readers. It may be relatable for some students that feel like they can not fit in, but it reminds them that all it matters is to be you and embrace who you are.

A charming debut about a thoughtful, creative preteen connecting to both halves of her identity.
