Edie’s Ensembles, written and illustrated by Ashley Spires is an enjoyable tale of friendship, fashion and what happens when you get too caught up in the attention of others. The text is given in short readable segments interspersed on the page by the colorful and charming illustrations of a school of animals. Young readers may enjoy the speech bubbles that occasionally are added to help give the characters opinions.
Edie, (a small deer, rodent or other undetermined animal) is best friends with Andrew, a young bird. They enjoy doing a variety of things together including dressing up. As Edie, the young fashionista puts more effort into being noticed she puts less effort into maintaining her friendships. Edie continues to make her outfits more extreme throughout the book until she has isolated herself from her other animal friends, most significantly Andrew. It takes a frightening moment for Edie to realize that she’s been lost under all her clothes and to find what truly maters.
I enjoyed the illustrations and friendship within the book. The moral of the story at times becomes a bit unclear but ends with Edie understanding how important friends really are.

Edie values attention for her outfits over all else, until one day, no one cares anymore. She learns that who she is, is more important than what she wears.

This is a great book. The message is excellent, the pictures really engaged my 7 year old, and we have read this a lot. It has become one of her favorite books especially as she likes to dress similarly. ( )
