Arthur Less is a gay man approaching his fiftieth birthday. I'm not a man. Or gay. And my fiftieth birthday was some time ago. I thought I'd never identify with him.

To avoid his former lover's wedding, Less takes an international speaking tour:

...because he is afraid of everything, nothing is harder than anything else. Taking a trip around the world is no more terrifying than buying a stick of gum. The daily dose of courage.

I kept reading to see what would happen next. I began to identify with our common situation:

“You’re like a person without skin.” A poet had said this. One who made her living flaying herself alive in public had said that he, tall and young and hopeful Arthur Less, was without skin. But it was true.

By his forties, all he has managed to grow is a gentle sense of himself, akin to the transparent carapace of a soft-shelled crab.

Less's adventure is not unfamiliar. People have said quotable things about leaving home to come back where you started. But the particulars of his journey are original and heartwarming.

“What is love, Arthur? What is it?” she asks him. “...Is it the good dear thing? Or is it the lightning bolt?”

It keeps ringing in his ears: Is it the good dear thing? Is it the good dear thing?

The narrator's identity is revealed near the end. I felt like I should have known.

I got the paperback at Goodwill.

This novel is a romantic comedy of a gay man approaching 50 with great fear and tripidation. There are several very funny parts and I did root for Arthur Less to find himself and to write a great novel. At the end one is left to believe that he has refound his great love but it's not so clear about the novel. I am disappointed by that as I did want to know that his novel was a success. In the last quarter of the book, Arthur's novel loses importance and I was sorry about that.
A good novel but a Pulitzer Prize winner?? Not sure on that. ( )

Hmm.... enjoyable. I usually LOVE Pulitzer's, but this one was just okay. You figure out the ending long before it ever arrives and then you're just reading to get to it. I'm obviously in the minority with my review. ( )

An amazing read. I wasn't sure what I would think of this book when I picked it up, it's not the type of fiction I usually read. No vampires, dwarves, ancient evils, nothing of the sort. Just poor old Arthur Less. But once I picked it up I couldn't put it down again. Thoroughly recommend it! ( )

Quirky, somewhat of a love story and world travel novel of a bumbling but likeable turning 50 gay man who is having a bit of a mid-life crisis. Good as an audio book, as the reader does great voices and accents for the various characters. Sometimes the past/present flip flops got a bit confusing, but longer reading chunks eliminated this pitfall. Not sure of the Pulitzer status, but it does make a marginalized genre fit in wonderfully with the mainstream. ( )

By his forties, all he has managed to grow is a gentle sense of himself, akin to the transparent carapace of a soft-shelled crab.
Freddy put on his red glasses, and in each aquarium a little blue fish swam.
From the open window came the song of roofers hammering and the smell of molten tar.
Arthur Less, encircling the globe! It feels cosmonautical in nature.
It is a bad musical, but, like a bad lay, a bad musical can do its job perfectly well. By the end, Arthur Less is in tears, sobbing in his seat, and he thinks he has been sobbing quietly until the lights come up and the woman seated beside him turns and says, "Honey, I don't know what happened in your life, but I am so so sorry," and gives him a lilac-scented embrace. Nothing happened to me, he wants to say to her. Nothing happened to me. I'm just a homosexual at a Broadway show.
