"Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself... Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career. Summoned to Evelyn's Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn's life unfolds, revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love, Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn's story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways."--… (mer)

A friend strongly recommended this book, and it was fine. It just wasn't really my sort of book. Evelyn Hugo is a movie star in the late 1950s and beyond. She is constantly scheming to increase her fame and power. She ends up having seven husbands which is ironic since the only person she truly loves is a woman. ( )

Monique, a relatively unknown magazine reporter/writer who is going through some relationship woes of her own, is caught off guard when famous movie star Evelyn Hugo, now age 79, decides she would like a biography written about her life and chooses Monique to do the honors. Evelyn, known for her beauty, her starring roles in Hollywood blockbusters, and her numerous husbands, has some secrets and is ready to tell all. But why has she chosen Monique?

I realize I'm a little late to the party with this one, but after enjoying Daisy Jones a few months ago, I decided I was ready for another go with Taylor Jenkins Reid. And again, I was not disappointed. Written in a style that's easy to devour and become engrossed in, that's exactly what I did. Typically I can give or take novels written about Hollywood life, but with flashbacks from the 50's up through the 90's, I was all in for this one. And though there were glimpses into the Hollywood life, there was also a lot of other meat to this story. I look forward to reading even more of this author's works. ( )

I kove everything about this book. Be it the characters, the storyline, the perfect portrayal of emotions, the complexity of loving and living to tell the truth.
I understand the hype behind it and I fully support it. ( )

This book is a masterpiece.

I thought this book was overrated at first, but boy I was wrong.

It's about the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo, yes, but there's so much more to it. The book highlighted so much social issues and I loved how it was presented, with no-bull and no sugarcoating whatsoever. This book will make you rage, and then make you cry like a newborn baby right after.

Evelyn is undeniably fierce, cold, and a force to be reckoned with, but at the same time she's much more humane than most of the characters. I loved how she never denied that her actions were downright awful. She's the kind of literary character that'll stay with you for a long long time. I love how her bisexuality was highlighted so much until the end of the book too.

I also loved Harry so much, his character's my next fave next to Evelyn. He ruined my heart so much that I was bawling for him and I had to pause before continuing to read. His bond with Evelyn was pure—unbreakable, even. Both Harry and Evelyn spoke to me in a way that I could never explain in words.

Overall, I absolutely adore Evelyn, and every single part of this book, even if it shattered my heart into tiny little pieces. It's all worth it and I'd still read it again. ( )

Monique Grant, a writer at Vivant Magazine, is tapped by movie star Evelyn Hugo to write about Evelyn. Monique's editor sees this as a coup for the magazine, but can't understand why Evelyn chose Monique, vs. a more established writer. Evelyn is firm--it's Monique or no one.
When Monique meets Evelyn, and Evelyn begins her story, Monique realizes that this is more than an article, Evelyn wants Monique to write her biography.
Evelyn tells her life story, her drive to overcome her poor beginnings and to become a wealthy and famous actress. She also tells Monique the story of her marriages--all of them, as well as her friendships with other Hollywood elite, including the Oscar winning Celia St. James.
Finally, she tells Monique the reason that Monique was given the story.
Evelyn tells Monique the truth about her life.
I loved this book, I got so caught up in Evelyn's story. Full of love and heartbreak, this story will stay with me. ( )
