This book is about the life of Eugenia, a scientist interested in sharks. It talks about her defying many people's belief in her abilities and becoming a scientist. She made several discoveries and disproved that sharks always had to keep moving. This book would be great for 3rd graders to learn that they can defy odds and do anything they put their minds to. This also speaks to following your passions. I think that this could pair well with a lesson on perseverance and working hard.

We love sharks around here, and even my kindergartener was enraptured by Clark's journey into studying sharks (despite being written for an older crowd).

This is a great picture biography! I love the amount of picture biographies that are being published nowadays. I have learned about so many people in history that I never would have before. This story follows the life of Eugenie Clark and her passion for sharks. She feels a connection to sharks from a young age and the reader gets to follow her career as she ventures into the ocean and studies them as she becomes an adult. Eugenie is an inspiring person, who you can't help but feel impressed and amazed by, even if sharks still scare you a bit! The story has great illustrations and interesting facts. The book ends with additional facts about sharks and a great text feature of a timeline. ( )

Eugenie Clark is the Shark Lady. She has loved sharks since her first visit to Battery Park Aquarium. Though science is not a preferred choice for women in the 1920s, she devotes her life to learning about sharks. She experiences racism because of her Japanese-American heritage but is determined to study science anway. She devotes her life to her research on sharks, making several discoveries, eventually becoming a professor. This book is a perfect example of following your childhood dreams and facing adversity. Outstanding book! Even though she is a famous zoologist this book introduced me to this scientist. She was an incredible woman. Accomplished, passionate, caring, smart, and her achievements are especially impressive because she was born in 1922 and had to buck convention to follow her dreams. This is another story about the power of nature, of books, and of a supportive family background and what a difference they can make. Eugenie Clark knew from an early age what her interests were and how to go about creating a fulfilling and meaningful life. There is a lot about her in the book proper and in the extra section in the back too. There is also a lot of information about sharks provided in the book. I learned some things.

While I’m not a fan of captive or trained wild animals I was interested in what I read and I appreciated that Clark did a lot of research in the sharks’ natural habitats and worked to make sure they were understood or at least not hunted or abused by humans.

The illustrations are terrific and fit the book.

I’m happy and grateful that this book is available. This woman deserves to be introduced to as many people as possible.

I appreciate that the author is also a zoologist.

A short bibliography is provided, and it includes two works by Eugenie Clark.
