Blackfeet author Stephen Graham Jones brings readers a spine-tingling Native American horror novella.Walking through his own house at night, a fifteen-year-old thinks he sees another person stepping through a doorway. Instead of the people who could be there, his mother or his brother, the figure reminds him of his long-gone father, who died mysteriously before his family left the reservation. When he follows it he discovers his house is bigger and deeper than he knew. The house is the kind of wrong place where you can lose yourself and find things you'd rather not have. Over the course of a few nights, chasing the ghost of his father and the promise of his Native American heritage, the boy tries to map out his house in an effort that puts his little brother in the worst danger, and puts him in the position to save his family . . . at terrible cost.… (mer)

Ooh, the creepiness is tangible, but you can never quite put your finger on it. And poor Dino. And that ending...guh. ( )

Objectively, I knew this was an amazing novella. It was super compelling, never felt like it was rushing, and truly shocked me a few times. The language and pacing was perfect. I was completely immersed in the story, and I never felt like it was too short or long.

But.

Horror is really not my thing, and whoa boy did this novella make me realize that. I knew it was brilliant. I just could not really like it. It was horrifying, and horrible. And the ending was so awfully horrific to contemplate that I was left reeling and shocked.

Horror fans would love this one, I think. Unfortunately, it wasn't for me. ( )

Surprising, unique and intriguing. An enjoyable read from start to finish from a perspective I haven't often read in fiction. ( )

Yikes. This was a really good read, but tough. That shift where Junior felt like his father was a benevolent presence to realizing he was a dangerous one was really interesting. I liked that it was being told from the perspective of grown-up Junior, and hearing about the life he ended up having, and Dino not really getting much better...it felt too real, like this horror/magic story should have had a happier ending. But it didn't. It just ended up like life ends up.
This book is about perpetuating your trauma. Real life isn't a story, happy endings aren't easy or inevitable, usually we all just turn into what we feared and hated and can't break the cycle. ( )

Strangely resonant. ( )
