I would probably give this a 4.5 if GoodReads allowed it, for a few themes that were (thankfully) left out of the television adaptation. There is an antisemitic trope that Gabaldon included which easily could have been omitted. Had she or an editor researched the provenance or even the discourse surrounding such tropes, it probably wouldn't have been included. I can't say much more without spoilers. There are themes surrounding the slave trade, although historically accurate, were unreasonably graphic as compared to other sensitive topics. Combined with the repeated use of white-savior heroism, these depictions were invasive and heavy-handed. Nonetheless, the writing is phenomenal. There is something for everyone--romance, adventure, drama, and humor. The plot is captivating, the characters are complex, and the imagery is rich and creative. I have mixed feelings about this book. It was fun to see how the books have differed from the show but I am disappointed in how the author has portrayed people of color and how she describes/characterizes fat characters. On the other hand, she includes three-dimensional gay characters, which seems forward for the 1990s. I can appreciate that it was written 20 years ago, I'm hoping that she does more justice for her non-white characters in the rest of the series!
