"When John Waters delivered his gleefully subversive advice to the graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design in 2015, the speech went viral, in part because it was so brilliantly on point about making a living as a creative person. From an icon of popular culture, here is inspiring advice for artists, graduates, and anyone seeking happiness and success on their own terms. Now we all can enjoy his sly wisdom in a manifesto that reminds us, no matter what field we choose, to embrace chaos, be nosy, and defy outdated critics"--… (mer)

Just a copy of his commencement speech to the graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design with some added illustrations. It's typical John Waters. I got it from the library, can't imagine having to pay retail 14.95 for a book you can finish in 15 minutes. ( )

Too short to even be called an essay, this commencement speech by Waters is his call to subversion of established norms. Of course this couldn't apply now as Socialism reigns supreme. Calling into question the ruling politburo elites is no longer allowed in this post-democractic/antidemocratic America. This Address was given to the students at Rhode Island School of Design, 2017. Meant to be flippant and irreverent, it is actually a plea for parents to connect, or try to connect, with their college-aged children before it is too late. This is actually a worthy topic for a Commencement Speech. Waters also demands that students master technology and new technology to further their goals. Line Drawings.

Don't hate all rich people. They're not all awful. Believe me, I know some evil poor people, too. We need some rich people: who else is going to back our movies or buy our art?
It's okay to hate the poor, too, but only the poor of spirit, not wealth. A poor person to me can have a big bank balance, but is uncurious, judgmental, isolated, and unavailable to change.
