In a time when technology penetrates our lives in so many ways and materialism exerts such a powerful influence over us, Cardinal Robert Sarah presents a bold book about the strength of silence. The modern world generates so much noise, he says, that seeking moments of silence has become both harder and more necessary than ever before. Silence is the indispensable doorway to the divine, explains the cardinal in this profound conversation with Nicolas Diat. Within the hushed and hallowed walls of the La Grande Chartreux, the famous Carthusian monastery in the French Alps, Cardinal Sarah addresses the following questions: Can those who do not know silence ever attain truth, beauty, or love? Do not wisdom, artistic vision, and devotion spring from silence, where the voice of God is heard in the depths of the human heart? After the international success of God or Nothing, Cardinal Sarah seeks to restore to silence its place of honor and importance. "Silence is more important than any other human work," he says, "for it expresses God. The true revolution comes from silence; it leads us toward God and others so as to place ourselves humbly and generously at their service."… (mer)

ENGLISH: A good book that delves us into the mystery of silence. The Cardinal is a disciple of Benedict XVI, a clear reference in current theology. There is talk of true silence, that of the soul, which has little to do with physical silence or that of oriental techniques. It is the silence of love, which is much deeper. This is Christian silence. Words are not enough. He is the one with a mother when he listens to his son or when you accompany a sick friend in the hospital. The Cardinal gives guidelines to achieve this silence, always from the Christian orbit. Describe the difficulties in reaching him in today's society.

Review in Spanish at this blog post.

Definitely found it to be not what I thought it was going to be. The title drew me to text and I didn't bother doing much (any!) research on it. So I ended up missing that the author is a Cardinal and that God is going to be basically on every page. This is not a detriment and I'm not hating on it in any way. But I tend to not really care for and shy away from overly religious texts (they genuinely don't interest me) and I wish I had realized this before picking it up.

Aside from that, the format is quite funky. It's a conversational/interview style text and while that has its merits I also feel that is a format that is better suited for magazine articles rather than a book. So unfortunately this ended up being a book completely not for me at all.

It seems there are plenty of people who did end up enjoying this and I'll bet that I'm not the audience for it. And I would probably like to read a text in this vein, even if books about/around religion just aren't my thing. But this was probably a book I should have never picked up and I would recommend skipping this one if you're someone who is more interested in a non-religious view on silence and don't like conversational/interview-style texts. The Power of Silence: Against the Dictatorship of Noise is a good book but it's subtitle is misleading. It should read the Carthusian Way. This is a book mostly in praise of the Carthusian monastic rule of silence, which is it's focus. There's nothing wrong with that it just wasn't what I expected. Cardinal Sarah did address society's overexposure to media, electronic noise, and the cacophony of modern life, but mostly in passing.

Another difficulty I had was Cardinal Sarah didn't define "silence" until very late in the book so I had trouble understanding. Early on, I began substituting the word "stillness" for silence and that helped.

I recommend this book to anyone interested understanding monastic spirituality. It was a good book, just not what I hoped for. ( )

The Power of Silence is the much anticipated follow up to Cardinal Sarah's memoir God or Nothing (if you haven't read that, stop what you're doing and go read it now—it's a life-changing book). In this volume, his focus is on the importance of silence, a virtue which has seemingly been discarded by modern society as useless or boring. In response, he and his trusty interviewer/sidekick, French journalist Nicolas Diat, explore the meaning and purose of silence as well as the venerable Carthusian Order—a monastic order in which silence plays a major role in daily life. The end of the book includes a discussion between Cardinal Sarah, Diat, and the Prior of Grande Charteuse about the order and about silence. A necessary book, and one I can highly recommend to anyone with an interest in the subject or in Cardinal Sarah. ( )
