On the one hand, the writing was competent and solid, the plot was strong, and there was nothing particularly wrong about it, except that this really didn’t feel like a Mitch Rapp novel. In fact, this felt like a neutered Mitch Rapp. The character was written more like Jack Ryan Jr. That isn’t inherently bad, it’s just not the same. Vince Flynn’s version of the character was unhinged, always on the edge of doing something utterly crazy, completely unpredictable. The character in this novel just wasn’t that. The author went out of his way to have other characters tell the reader how dangerous, and fearsome, and crazy Rapp was, but that character never came across the page. I don’t want to go overly negative on the novel since it was an entertaining read, but it misses the mark for what I was looking for. If this is how Kyle Mills is going to write the character, then I would just as soon not read any more of these novels, and keep my memories of this very memorable character as it was prior to the handoff to Mills. Picked up a hardcover. Too bad they changed the narrator for the series. Not that there's anything wrong with Scott Brick, but hearing his voice reminds me too much of Clive Cussler's characters. (
