"Set on a postapocalyptic frontier, Blackwing is a gritty fantasy debut about a man's desperate battle to survive his own dark destiny... Hope, reason, humanity: the Misery breaks them all. Under its cracked and wailing sky, the Misery is a vast and blighted expanse, the arcane remnant of a devastating war with the immortals known as the Deep Kings. The war ended nearly a century ago, and the enemy is kept at bay only by the existence of the Engine, a terrible weapon that protects the Misery's border. Across the corrupted no-man's-land teeming with twisted magic and malevolent wraiths, the Deep Kings and their armies bide their time. Watching. Waiting. Bounty hunter Ryhalt Galharrow has breathed Misery dust for twenty bitter years. When he's ordered to locate a masked noblewoman at a frontier outpost, he finds himself caught in the middle of an attack by the Deep Kings, one that signifies they may no longer fear the Engine. Only a formidable show of power from the very woman he is seeking, Lady Ezabeth Tanza, repels the assault. Ezabeth is a shadow from Galharrow's grim past, and together they stumble onto a web of conspiracy that threatens to end the fragile peace the Engine has provided. Galharrow is not ready for the truth about the blood he's spilled or the gods he's supposed to serve… (mer)

It was an excellent fantasy story with a well written and complex world, and a magic system that was able to hold itself up consistently.

I liked the characters well enough, though I didnt fall in love with them the way I would have liked too, which was the only thing really letting the story down for me. Even so, it was packed full of flawed, funny and badass characters - there just weren't any I personally was able to connect to. ( )

Title: Blackwing
Series: Raven's Mark #1

Rating: 1 of 5 Stars
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 325/120
Words: 119K/40K

Synopsis:

DNF'd at approximately the 30% mark.

My Thoughts:

Besides the profanity I mentioned in my previous Currently Reading & Quote post, McDonald also crossed one of the lines for what I'll not accept in my entertainment reading. As such, I am done with this book, this series and this author.

The cover blurb describes this as a mix of China Mieville and David Gemmell. Fast paced, not too complicated adventure/battle fantasy. I would say it leans more towards Gemmell than Mieville, it has some unique aspects but it just isn't funky enough for Mieville.

Ryhalt Galharrow is a Blackwing (the only one we meet in the book), a sort of special forces commander who is beholden only to Crowfoot, a super wizard guardian of The Range, the boundary lands holding back the undead drudge hordes of the Deep Kings. Captain Galharrow is a mercenary and bounty hunter most of the time, doing what he can to make a living, until after a 5 year absence, Crowfoot starts giving him orders again. Galharrow has skeletons in his closet but while rough around the edges, he's generally a good guy. Along with his team of Nenn and Tnota, he's sent to save an old acquaintance, Lady Tanza and off they go on a top secret mission.

Semi-dark but not too bad, there is a lot of action in this book and some good writing. A little over the top at times, but quite good. This book also pretty much stands on its own, while it is part of a series, it did not feel like I was missing something by not reading the next book, which I will do. ( )

**Blackwing** by *Ed McDonald* is classed as grimdark fantasy. I'm usually careful about those – much of the genre strikes me as ~edgy~ woe-is-me drivel that just delights in being as cynical as possible. Looking at the facts, Blackwing seems similar: middle-aged first-person character with a hard, depressing life, competent but always in difficulties, drinks too much, brutality all around, now the world (which is already pretty gruesome) seems to be ending. Add in higher beings using humans as playthings in their ineffable games, and … yeah.

But Blackwing works against this setting: The protagonist is a cynical hardass, but also unreliable, and still cares about humanity (and specific humans). Having positive motivations, and emotions, in a story like this made **all** the difference. It was a good read, and I'm looking forward to tackling the second volume (third one is scheduled to be published this summer). ( )
