This is a tough one for me. So much so that I have not even decided how many stars to give it. I am going to write my review, and then decide-Very unusual for me.

First a bit of the story: This the tale of a world filled with Dragons, and Wyrms, and Wyrvens. It is the old tale of Good Vs. Evil, of ancient curses, and young women fighting the good fight. This is a truly feminist fantasy, and I loved that

Let's start with the world. Enchanting comes to mind, and Overwhelming *sigh*. I love a map, but it needs to be a great map, and this one fell short for me. There were places mentioned that I could not find any where on the map.

The world is split into territories, or Queendoms might be a better word. There were 4 POV's throughout, with the chapters labeled North, South, East and West. It got a bit confusing and overwhelming at points. Sadly, I never got that attachment to characters, which for me is very important. There were some great relationships, but they felt contrived at times. *Heavy Sigh* I wanted so much more from this book.

This was Samantha Shannon first attempt at Adult High Fantasy. She could have had a better book. There were points in the story where it fit that tag, but there were other things that felt like bad Young Adult. I blame the editor's for not reigning her in. At 848 pages, I expected so much more. At page 650, I was counting down the pages left. You just cannot label it DNF when you are that far in.
It took me over a month to finish, only because it did not call to me when I went reaching for a book.

Did I like it, yes. Would I give this author another chance in this genre, absolutely. Would I recommend it-Only to some.

3 1/2 stars rounding down to 3 on my shelf.

This is how you do fantasy people. I had my interest piqued for this book when it came out. Feeling a little bit daunting to pick it up cause of its size I held it off for a while. Looking back I’m hitting myself on the head for not picking it up sooner.

In this epic fantasy we follow a couple of different point of views. First, we have Ead, a maid with a secret mission at the court of the house of Berethnet. A Queendom that has ruled the land of Inys a thousand years. Their throne gets handed down from mother to daughter and is now in the hands of Queen Sabran the Ninth. Across the sea we follow Tate an orphaned girl who has trained her whole life to become a dragon rider. We follow her on her journey to become a dragon rider and finding out about her heritage. Telling you more would probably spoil things so I’ll leave it at that.

Dude! This was epic! I can’t get over how good this was. The way this whole story is set up is amazing. The world is so unique and easy to follow it serves as a good example how a fantasy novel should be handled. We have an intricate world that makes sense and is believable. The way religion is woven into the different parts of the continent is amazing. The way the politics work is interesting. The history and the lore that is explained is just mind blowing.
The characters are so fresh and layered. There wasn’t a single character that I didn’t like. Now of course I had my favorites, but that didn’t mean I disliked any. Which is a huge accomplishment. All had different ways of dealing with things and it was fun to see them grown and see where the story took them. I don’t think I can really make a connection to anything I’ve read or seen to make a comparison. The story was really unique and just really fun overall.

A “modern” fantasy novel that deserves all the readers. I can’t recommend this enough.

Summer 2019 (Whispersync);

Laura told me to read this book months ago and I put it off while the end of the year ate me whole, but I set it aside, picking up both the kindle & audible on a sale day, and promised it would be the first book of my summer. This book was gorgeous. Truly, deeply gorgeous. Priory of the Orange Tree moved quickly before being halfway over into being a potential 5 star, and by the end had moved itself into being my favorite fantasy book of the year (tied neck-and-neck with Queen's Shadow for favorite overall of the year, too).

The world-building in this, across oceans as well as centuries, was breathing taking. I could absolutely see where all the divisions of land, old wars, and religions were, and I was so delighted and relieved when the reveals paid off in realistic, painful, beautiful ways, that absolutely made sense for how the dominoes would have fallen on on different continents through actions of wholly mortal, fallible, and inspiring characters.

I fell in love with every single one of our point characters. I fell in love with the lying warrior priestess. I fell in love with the trapped and scared, yet gorgeously brave, haunted queen. I fell in love with the dragon rider who crossed a whole sea to free her dragon regardless of how it could never free her. I fell in love with the young courtier who followed the words of his lover and fell out of his world and was irreparably changed by the choices he had to make. I fell in love with the exiled alchemist who loved so deeply the chains of his ghost echo in his every step.

This book is so rich, and I'm sighing just remembering it. I don't want to give a lot of spoilers due to this one being this year and the fact I need to talk another million people into reading it. Still, understand as a last leaving note, I've already picked up the first book in the author's other much longer series because I need to keep my eye on everything Samantha is writing in the future. It is a complexity—moral, thematic, and social—that The Priory of the Orange Tree is short on, for all its length.
