4.5 ⭐️s. I believe the audio version is what deserves that extra half star-- excellent narration.

As for the story, I loved our protagonist, all of the characters with their different (If maybe a little stereotypical at times) personalities, the challenge, the setting, the goals, etc. I was totally pulled in. And I did immediately start book 2... ( )

This is a fun action-packed science fiction adventure with some depth to it. Ten teenagers from around the world have been selected to journey on a spaceship to another planet, called Eden, where they will be asked to mine for a special alien substance called nyxia. Nyxia is really cool, you can mentally manipulate it into any shape or device you want, so of course it is extremely valuable; the corporation who is running this expedition is going to pay the teens a lifetime's worth of money in exchange for their services on this year long round trip. Why teens, you ask, and not adult astronaut-miners? Well, there's a slight hiccup: the aliens who live on Eden do not get along with adult humans, actually they're quite violent, and respect only kids and teens! And early into the trip, our teens discover another hiccup: only 8 of them will actually get to set foot on Eden--all ten have to compete during their training sessions as if they're on a reality tv show, earning points and becoming fierce rivals with each other as they battle for the top eight slots. The main character is Emmet, an African-American young man from a lower income household, who is eager to earn the money he needs to pay for his mother's expensive medical treatments. He makes some friends with the other applicants despite trying to remain aloof; there are also some who take a dislike to him no matter how civil he is to them. There are lots of exciting competitions among the ten as they learn the skills and training they will need on another planet. There is also an undercurrent of intrigue, as the corporate overlords are hiding some secrets that Emmet gets too close to. This book was nominated by Ohio students for the Buckeye Teen Book Award, so it's got a lot of fans in Ohio, and I have to agree with them, it's a lot of fun and a good adventure with some cool alien sci-fi concepts. Looking forward to the sequel! ( )

This is quite a thrilling read -- the action grabs you from the very beginning. This would appeal to kids who like more than adventure -- the characters are well-drawn and very realistic as they face the challenges of a competition to see who will prevail (no spoilers). There's an updated [b:Ender's Game|375802|Ender's Game (Ender's Saga, #1)|Orson Scott Card|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1408303130l/375802._SY75_.jpg|2422333] vibe, but very focused on what's going on through the eyes of one of the teen competitors. This might be especially attractive to boys who are a little tired of the flat story-telling of video games. This story gives all of the action but with real human growth and change driving the story. ( )

Advance Review Copy.

This book is Ender's Game mixed with a shadowy corporation.

My main complaint though:
This is part of a Trilogy. I think a trilogy should be three related stories that tell an overarching story. For example, Star Wars Trilogy has three movies that have a beginning, middle and end. This seems more like the first third of one story, sort of like the book ending just as the Millennium Falcon reaches what is left of Alderaan.

Characters are ok and nice to have all the characters be minorities and not stereotypes. Would I read the rest of the series... if I had it right there ready to go after I finished this one, probably. However if it is going to be months/years before a sequel comes out, probably not.

If you love a good Sci-fi, this book is for you! I can’t say enough about this book. It kept me engaged from cover to cover! The character development, (especially the protagonist, Emmett- fathom?), the storyline, the story telling was superb! My only problem with Scott Reintgen's book, Nxyia was that it left me wanting for more! The twists, the turns all the way to the end were pleasantly placed and non-expected. I can't wait for the next book. I want to see what Eden, itself looks like. Well done, Mr. Reintgen, you've drawn me in to your world. I think I'm going to have to add these books to my home library shelves! I know the most excellent teen who will love it! ( )
