This gentle and tender story is an extraordinary tale. Translated from Japanese, it tells of the story of man looking to find a new home for his beloved cat. In a series of flashbacks, readers learn of this man’s past, of his family and friends, and of his love for two special cats who graced his life. Though a quick read, the story of Satoru is a poignant one that readers will linger over, slowing over the words to the bittersweet ending. It is much more than just a story of a man and his cats. It talks about relationships, love, family, and friends, and the loss of those things. But it also talks about endurance, hope, and of things to come. ( )

You ask if we cats can see ghosts. Don't you know that there are things in this world that are better left a mystery?

This is a beautifully heartbreaking book and now one of my favourites of all time.

I picked this up hoping for a light and breezy feel-good read after finishing a particularly devastating book...and found myself bawling through half of it. The story is as much tragic as it is hopeful and it speaks of such kindness in people that I think it could warm the heart of the biggest cynic.

The storytelling is exquisite. Throughout the book the narrator switches from Nana the cat (in what I would deem 'the present') and Satoru (in the stories from his past), with the last couple of chapters focused mainly on Nana's point of view. This gave me the feeling that I was actually there with the characters, traveling with them and in the room listening to their stories.

The relationships, friendships and dialogue between the characters were absolutely beautifully written, with the 'dialogue' between Nana and Satoru holding a special place in my heart. Even though whenever they spoke to the other it was realistically one-sided, they shared such a strong understanding through gestures and looks.
I particularly loved how each of Satoru's friends (including the cat) were portrayed. Both their flaws and their strengths were at the forefront the things they did in equal measure and that made them so endearing. They all felt like friends I would wish for.

Do yourself the favour of reading this. Cat-lover or not, there is something to be gained from reading an account of such hope in humanity and kindness.

Borrowed from my daughter. As it says on the cover; bewitching and comforting. ( )

To be honest, I picked up this book for the black cat depicted on the book cover. It reminded me of the stray kitten who stayed with me for 4 days only but I fall hard for him at first sight. Due to certain circumstances, I had to give him up for adoption. He's with a family who would be able to take better care of him now.

However, upon reading the book, I found that the furry protagonist is not a black cat at all. It is described as almost all-white cat, with two spots of black on his face, angled downwards, like the Chinese character hachi (eight) and the black and bent tail. The publisher explained that they found this original Chinese brush painting while researching images online and fell in love with it. The painting is titled ‘Man and the World’ by Shuai Liu, a Chinese painter with cerebral palsy whose work is supported by Chilture.com, a studio of disabled artists.

In spite of feeling just a little cheated by the book cover, the novel soon won me over by the love and loyalty between the furry protagonist, Nana and his human, Satoru. Nana had claimed Satoru’s and my heart in a matter of a few pages. And as I traveled with Nana and Satoru to see his three old friends and finally to stay with his aunt, I find myself laughing out loud, crying silent tears and getting my heartstrings pulled when I found out the reason why Satoru wanted to give Nana away and why Nana has to stay with Satoru till the end.

Nana has claimed Satoru for his human and there is no other who can take his place. If this isn’t what true love is, I don’t know then. ( )

The Traveling Cat Chronicles - Arikawa
3.5 stars

Nana is a cat with an assertive personality. He and his human, Satoru, are on a road trip. The stated purpose of the trip is to find Nana a new home. As most of the story is told from a cat perspective, the reader knows what Nana knows. At first, he doesn’t realize why Satoru wants to find him a new home. Clever cat, he does his best to sabotage the mission as the reason is gradually revealed.

I had some trouble connecting with this story. I wavered between 3 and 4 stars. Some of my impatience with the story may be a problem of translation. The language was often stilted. The interior thoughts of the human characters were often repetitious without giving additional insight to the character’s motivation. Eventually, I realized that this might have been the author’s purpose. Saturo is reconnecting with old friends as he tries to rehome Nana. In each situation the characters have unresolved issues from the past. The repetitious thoughts are indicative of lives that are stuck. As a message, that makes sense. As a reading experience, it was annoying.

This was a sweet story. Sometimes it was too sweet. Satoru was too serene, too forgiving, too reserved. I felt that the author was using Satoru to preach a sermon. It was a sermon with a valuable, moving lesson, but sometimes it interfered with the storytelling. Fortunately, Nana kept the story moving. I thought the ending was very well done. The perfect moment of grace. ( )
