What is it?
The protagonist of this lyric novel (yes, it’s written in poetry, which I loved), is a 15-year-old boy named Will who lives in an unnamed city in present time. Although most of the story actually takes place in an elevator, we do know the city is active with gangs and gang violence. Will witnessed his brother’s death due to gang violence and has vowed to follow “The Rules,” which are: no crying, no snitching, and get revenge. With a gun in his waistband, he heads to the elevator to seek revenge. On the way down, the elevators stop at each floor to welcome a ghost from Will’s past. Each one is there to offer Will a different perspective of death caused by unnecessary violence. As you read, you no longer see the story made up of poems. Instead, you are transported to Will’s otherworldly experience.

Should you read it? YES!
This book is unlike anything else I've ever read partially due to the writing style (poetry), the setting, and the concept of an elevator ride used to visit with ghosts and question one's morals, an elevator ride that is only 1 minute long. Although there are references to gang violence and drugs in the book, it isn't glorified or overly described. Because of that, I would suggest readers be in 8th grade or higher. There is a lot of emotion hiding in this story, so I would offer a disclaimer to younger or less mature readers. This book invites readers into another world, into another person's shoes, as he makes one of the biggest decisions of his life. Most readers would benefit from this empathy and diversity.

This was an excellent work of fiction written in verse. Staring a young black man riding an elevator in order to follow the 3 rules of the street. Don't Cry! Don't Snitch! Get Revenge! ( )

It starts with a free verse poem, which I took to be an epigraph. Then another. Oh, a double epigraph, okay… Then another. Then another. Oh, the whole thing is like this?

You can finish this book in less than ninety minutes. The story is pretty much how you’d expect (what’s the name for the Christmas Carol trope where ghosts from a person’s past come back to teach them a lesson?).

Some might say it lacks depth, since it packs a small punch. But it’s a definite punch. It’s written by the same author as The Boy in the Black Suit, which I liked. ( )

I am a huge fan of Reynolds. This book was beautiful and painful. The audiobook was done by the author AND the interview with the author was insightful. ( )

This is the first book I've read by Jason Reynolds, and I was definitely not disappointed! I appreciated the fact that the novel was written in verse. I really think that added impact and meaning to what Reynolds was trying to convey. I also liked the way Reynolds made "The Rules," a theme throughout the book. The way Will questioned himself was moving and felt so real. ( )
