Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn't commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy's time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. After five years, Roy's conviction is suddenly overturned, and he returns to Atlanta ready to resume their life together.… (mer)

The Short of It:

Not what I expected. Tense, but exhausting.

The Rest of It:

Roy and Celestial are newly married. Both, have promising careers on the verge of success but one night, Roy is falsely accused of rape and they are torn from one another. It doesn’t matter that his alibi is solid, he’s black and the woman accusing him of the crime is not backing down. Roy is sentenced to twelve years for a crime he did not commit. Celestial is left wondering how to navigate this kind of marriage. Is it a marriage? Can she commit to a marriage like this? One where your husband is behind bars for twelve years?

This was a difficult read for me. These characters flirt with virtue and then do the opposite, over and over again. Although I could see their logic and often their justification for their actions, I quickly grew tired of the push and pull.

Additionally, I really had a problem with how Celestial is made out to be a piece of property over and over again. It didn’t fit her personality as she is very strong-willed and independent. Perhaps that’s why it bothered me so much that the author even went there. There is an entire section of the book where she’s referred to as “my woman” and that just rubbed me the wrong way.

Is An American Marriage a good book for a club to discuss? I think there is plenty to discuss. Between the false accusations and imprisonment, what it means to be married, the issues centering around race and class, and the importance of family, a group would have plenty to chew on.

Tayari Jones - An American Marriage: I was truly ambivalent about this novel until close to the end, when its slice-of-life nature made it work for me. #cursorybookreviews #cursoryreviews ( )

It took a while for me to get to this and it was worth the wait. Precise and beautiful characterization. The themes are complex and important. Wonderful imagery. ( )

"An American Marriage" is my first Tayari Jones's book. I heard a lot of good things about this book, and it intrigued me. I picked up the hardcopy from my bookstore, and I saw the audiobook at the Libby app. I had to put it straight away to my holds. As soon as the audiobook was available to me, I borrowed and listened right away.
For me, "An American Marriage is 4.5-stars. This book was seriously so moving. Tayari created real people, people I feel like I know, and it's always a treat when an author writes a story so complex that you're not sure who's a side you're supposed to be on.
The unfairness in what happens to Roy is tragic, yet this story goes way beyond that and becomes more about survival, love, and humanity. This book isn't about prison as such; in fact, him serving his sentence is a relatively small part of it, and there is no day-to-day of his life inside. It's about people.
One of the many ideas that stays with me after reading this book is how even in this day and age, a decent man's life can be swept away on a whim because he is black. Working hard and following all the rules won't be enough, and everyone in this book knows it and lives with that fact.
There is no doubt in my mind that this book deserves all the praise it has received, but I am not sure I found this an enjoyable experience. "An American Marriage" is not a book to read if you are looking for some light relief! It evokes a visceral feeling of pain in response to the emotional turmoil of Celestial, Roy, and Andre and is a very uncomfortable read in parts. ( )

But home isn't where you land; home is where you launch. You can't pick your home any more than you can choose your family. In poker, you get five cards. Three of them you can swap out, but two are yours to keep: family and native land.
