Presents an assessment of Israel's state-sponsored assassination programs that evaluates the protective beliefs that are instituted into every Israeli citizen, the role of assassination in the state's history, and the ethical challenges of Israel's policies on targeted killings. "The first definitive history of the Mossad, Shin Bet, and the IDF's targeted killing programs, from the man hailed by David Remnick as "arguably [Israel's] best investigative reporter." The Talmud says: "If someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first." This instinct to take every measure, even the most aggressive, to defend the Jewish people is hardwired into Israel's DNA. From the very beginning of its statehood in 1948, protecting the nation from harm has been the responsibility of its intelligence community and armed services, and there is one weapon in their vast arsenal that they have relied upon to thwart the most serious threats: Targeted assassinations have been used countless times, on enemies large and small, sometimes in response to attacks against the Israeli people and sometimes preemptively. In this page-turning, eye-opening book, journalist and military analyst Ronen Bergman offers a riveting inside account of the targeted killing programs--their successes, their failures, and the moral and political price exacted on the men and women who approved and carried out the missions. Bergman has gained the exceedingly rare cooperation of many current and former members of the Israeli government, including Prime Ministers Shimon Peres, Ehud Barak, Ariel Sharon, and Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as high-level figures in the country's military and intelligence services: the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), the Mossad (the world's most feared intelligence agency), Caesarea (a "Mossad within the Mossad" that carries out attacks on the highest-value targets), and the Shin Bet (an internal security service that implemented the largest targeted assassination campaign ever, in order to stop what had once appeared to be unstoppable: suicide terrorism). Including never-before-reported, behind-the-curtain accounts of key operations, and based on hundreds of on-the-record interviews and thousands of files to which Bergman has gotten exclusive access over his decades of reporting, Rise and Kill First brings us deep into the heart of Israel's most secret activities. Bergman traces, from statehood to the present, the gripping events and thorny ethical questions underlying Israel's targeted killing campaign, which has shaped the Israeli nation, the Middle East, and the entire world."--Dust jacket.… (mer)

Wow. This a a lengthy and detailed history of something you'd never expect to have any public documentation -- Israel's assassination program, from before the State of Israel to a couple years ago (Iranian counter-nuclear proliferation). As a book, this is exceptional.

The one weakness is it's really "just the facts", rather than explaining much of the logic and policy debate around this stuff.

As for the Israeli assassination programs -- this is much more complex. It is clear most of the actions of Mossad (and even more so, the pre-Statehood terrorist organizations) are terrible. They killed some people who were clearly bad people, but they also killed plenty of innocent people, or people who in a rational world would not have been executed, and they flagrantly violated the laws of many countries around the world. However, actual wars are even worse for everyone, including innocent civilians, so if it's a tradeoff of terrorism and assassination vs. two nation-state fighting, there's less harm in the former case. Yet, there are a lot of actions documented in this book which neither reduced the risk of conflict nor were otherwise justifiable -- individuals trying to rise in power within the hierarchy through conducting marginally-justifiable actions, refusing to cancel operations when circumstances changed, and actual incompetence. Being a secret program, there's limited accountability for any of this, and without works like this book, no opportunity for public debate. ( )

«Bergman estima que desde a Segunda Guerra Mundial o Estado judaico e as suas organizações paramilitares tenham assassinado mais pessoas do que qualquer outro país do mundo ocidental.»
The Washington Post
A primeira e definitiva história das campanhas de assassínios seletivos de Israel, operadas pelas agências Mossad, Shin Bet e FDI, aclamada pelo The New York Times como «uma obra excecional, um livro humano sobre um tema incendiário».
O Talmude diz: «Se alguém vier matar-te, ergue-te e mata-o primeiro.»

BERGMAN HAS AN AGENDA--WE DID ALL THIS KILLING (MOSSD, SHIN BET) AND re still not ahead. We are still in same place with the Arabs still trying to get us out of Israel. Therefore, we should try a different way--BUT MY QUESTION--WHAT & WITH WHOM?
Bergman gives a lot of detain and facts & details make a bad image of Israel. ( )

Heavy material. Boatload of research done - quite impressive. The notes at the back are just as meaty as the chapters. Really digs into the plan by Israel to just wipe people out. And takes an unbiased view about how sometimes the ramifications of a killing were not worth it. Meaning - would have been better to leave this guy in place, instead of killing him and having a worse replacement. But isnt that the point - the consequences are not known. Looks like a policy US adopted as well. ( )

Let us not today cast blame on the murderers. Who are we to argue against their potent hatred for us? For eight years they have been sitting in the refugee camps in Gaza, and before their eyes we have been turning the land and villages in which they and their forefathers lived into our own inheritance... We are the generation of settlement, and without steel helmets and the maw of the cannon we will not be able to plant a tree or build a home. Our children will not live if we do not dig shelters, and without barbed wire fences and machine guns we will not be able to pave roads or drill for water. Millions of Jews, annihilated because they had no country, gaze at us from the dust of Jewish history and command us to settle and raise up a land for our people.
