Without a doubt, Machado is an incredible writer. Some passages, especially in The Husband Stitch, took my breath away; the descriptive language often gave me chills and left me with a unexpected sense of uneasiness. However, I found this collection to be a mixed bag and was ultimately left feeling indifferent. I was a fan of some of these stories, especially The Husband Stitch, Inventory, Real Women have Bodies, and The Resident (which though not exactly similar, reminded me a lot of The Haunting of Hill House). However, I find that this collection is tainted by Especially Heinous, a disjointed plot summary of twelve seasons of Law & Order: SVU that felt reminiscent of a high schooler’s book report. As I mentioned, her writing is really poignant and beautiful. That being said, I think I would definitely read some of her future works. I will say this every time, I don't expect to love every story in a collection. The Husband Stitch is a strong start, I enjoyed Inventory and Real women Have Bodies. Most of the others did not hit well, the Residency mostly made me wonder if I recognized the specific location from another book, and I flat out had to skip Especially Heinous. It's difficult not to feel disappointed when the bulk of the collection doesn't live up to those gems. I'm sure these hit in an entirely different order for others, and that's wonderful. It's not a book I'll keep on my shelf, but I did love the ones I love and I would read the author again. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

For that - I give the book 3.5 stars. And because I hope writers will do the same for me, I always round up. I'd absolutely recommend giving this one a read, but prepare yourself for that SVU story - have I mentioned it's half the book? (
