Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there's a hundred thousand dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett's son, Davis. Aza is trying. She is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, and maybe even a good detective, while also living within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.… (mer)

Var är Alaska? : en roman av John Green (MarchingBandMan)
MarchingBandMan: The other quasi-existentialist John Green book. Miles Halter deals with existentialism/nihilism in a different way than Aza Holmes, yet this earlier, rawer YA novel expounds on similar themes.

I read this book in 2018 and it is now 2020. I couldn't remember what exactly this book was about or if I even liked it or not, so I pulled up my review and discovered I never added my review. Luckily, I had discussed the book via email with my bookish BFF, so I am copying and pasting what I wrote to her about it, with some minor edits and updates. There may or may not be spoilers, depending on what you consider spoilers, so, be warned.
-------------------------
Turtles All The Way Down by John Green, author of Looking For Alaska, which I read and enjoyed and cried my eyes out over the series; The Fault In Our Stars, which I think I’ve only seen the movie and have not read the book yet; An Abundance of Katherines, which I’d never even heard of until now, and Paper Towns, which I haven’t read yet and the movie was just ok for me.

Turtles is about two friends, Daisy and Aza, who learn the billionaire father of one of their classmates, Davis, is missing and there is a reward for finding him. Daisy wants that reward!!!!

Some reviewers found the plot line about trying to find the missing dad far fetched. People, please. Of course it’s far fetched. So is every Nancy Drew mystery or any other story where kids are out solving crimes, murders and mysteries. It’s a story! Get over it. Just focus on the characters FFS!!!

And don’t worry, that is not the main focus of the book and the author gets that out of the way quickly and moves on with what the book is really about: Friendships, and growing up and figuring things out. And mental illness.

Turtles “is a wrenching and revelatory novel that provides a window into what it’s like to live in constant fear of your own mind.”

Our girl Aza struggles with anxiety and OCD. I don’t have OCD but I can definitely relate to her anxiety and spiraling thoughts. The difference is that for me it’s random, for Aza it’s extreme, constant, and life consuming.

I learned that the author, John Green, has OCD and there is a New York Times article on him that was highly recommended by others and now by me. Unfortunately, the NYT has that annoying paywall and they found out about the secret way we were all getting around the paywall and tightened their lax security so, you may or may not be able to read the article via this link. “No one ever says goodbye unless they want to see you again.”

“Life is a series of choices between wonders.”

I liked this book.

While I certainly knew who John Green was, this was the first time I picked up one of his books. I don't read a lot of YA (my 59-year-old mom does; she considers herself YG -- Young Geriatric -- and thoroughly enjoys the YA genre). But I was enticed by the description and a protagonist, Aza, struggling with severe anxiety and OCD. Green, who has OCD, has said Aza was the only character he *could* write at this point, given his daily experiences and challenges. If you've lived any of this, if you've had thoughts you couldn't escape from -- and wondered, if you don't control them, who does? -- this book will resonate with you.

"Turtles All the Way Down" wasn't the most amazing book I've ever read, but it was well-written and captured so well an experience many can relate to. Recommend.

“The thing about a spiral is, if you follow it inward, it never actually ends. It just keeps tightening, infinitely.”

This book is partly a mystery, but it is mostly a character study of a teenager with mental illness. The story is fast-paced enough to hold a reader's interest, but there are ruminations and charming, thoughtful insights too. There were a handful of implausibilities and factual errors that jumped out at me, but they're all easily explained by perspective of the narrator.

I generally feel uncomfortable reading about the experience of mental illness. It's weirdly intimate. There's something different about empathizing with a likeable and emotionally relatable character who is suffering mental anguish compared to someone suffering physical pain. I think a book which was any more focused on that would've been too much for me, but this book balanced the pain with enough other stuff that I could handle it.

I picked up this book thinking it would be an easy read, because it is intended for young adults. It wasn't, and I got more out of it than I was anticipating. ( )

While it didn't rip my heart out entirely, the way I expected it to, I spent the majority of the book riveted. Green does such an incredible job of putting Aza's thoughts on display for us that I couldn't get away. A wonderfully emotional journey. ( )

At the time I first realized I might be fictional, my weekdays were spent at a publicly funded institution on the north side of Indianapolis called White River High School, where I was required to eat lunch at a particular time -- between 12:37 P.M. and 1:14 P.M. -- by forces so much large than myself that I couldn't even begin to identify them.

But I was beginning to learn that your life is a story told about you, not one that you tell....You think you're the painter, but you're the canvas.
Your now is not your forever.
I thought about him asking me if I'd ever been in love. It's  a weird phrase in English, in love, like it's a sea you drown in or a town you live in. You don't get to be in anything else---in friendship or in anger or in hope. All you can be in is love.
