This is one of those rare books about Vietnam that chronicles life as an advisor on a day to day basis. The author was one of the few, smart enough to keep a diary of his tour in Viet-Nam and as a result is able to capture the essence of that year, often down to the time of day and grid coordinate. The author spent five months as a G-3 briefer for the Capitol Military District and seven months out in the field in Can Gio District working in and around the Rung Sat Special Zone, a stinking mangrove swamp. This is a book for all who serve as advisors. They can identify with it and those who didn't serve with MACB should read it so they can see what this special group had to accomplish and how difficult it was. I also recommend it for anyone just interested in that little understood effort of the war; the role of the advisor. These men were on their own and success of failure often dependedupon their ability to make things happen. I am a retired U.S. army officer.… (mer)
